Chateau stores nearing completion
Work at the Chateau in South Lake Tahoe is nearly finished. The sidewalk along Highway 50 is open to the public.
The storefronts are just waiting for finishing touches and then tenants.
While it was anticipated shops would have been open before July 4, there is no opening date now. South Lake Tahoe officials still have not received any permit applications from anyone seeking to put up a sign. A spokesman for the project is not releasing information.
Ski clothing and a T-shirt shop are the known retailers beyond McP’s pub which will occupy the circular building above.
The retail portion is a fragment of what was supposed to be the city’s largest development project. A convention center and two hotels were also to be built. The permits still say that is what will happen one day.

It looks way better than the hole!
Just how many T-shirt shops and ski clothing stores can this community support??
With the Nev. side of the state line not up to standards with income, I doubt this new center will make any difference to either side of the line.
Much success to all!!!
I kind of liked the shat-hole. It exemplified to a T(shirt) the far reaching vision of our local government….and had a ghetto-chic quality that sent kitscarson’s blood pressure boiling to dangerous levels… What with all the urban scum who came to TahoeSouth just to graffitti.
yes it does look decent, but no announced tenants because the rent is too high….and you get T-shirt shops, ski clothing, and restaurants/bars because you can buy stuff cheaply and sell high
Hey Tom and ljames, have you seen what is behind the shops? The hole is still there! Drive around the entire project area to get a good view.
It is gonna look like ‘Slumgarden Apartments’ in 20 years. I bet there’s been all kinds of corners cut and codes violated while the moneygrubbers looked the other way.
Rebel, I know the hole is still there in the back
but at least you can’t see the “Shat-hole” (thanks hmmm…) from the front. It will probably end up being a bunch of shops like heavenly village where no locals would go..I know I won’t. I think McP’s will probably do well with all the rummys staggering out of the clubs.
Maybe thats the new parking area coming in.Looking good in front ,nice job.
I do not understand these comments about The Chateau at all. Some of you really want “The Hole” back?! Or the old slums that were demolished?! I think it is looking pretty good.
I’m getting the impression that some of the posters on this article want this project to fail and I don’t understand why anyone would want that. It’s an attractive new project that hopefully will bring some much needed revenue into our town and it looks way better than what had been there for at least the last 50-years. What is so bad about trying to upgrade our community, and why would anyone choose failure over success?
Next should be the elimination of Tahoe Tom’s.
Anyone know when the rest of the project is going to be built? The convention center piece of the puzzle is what will bring people to South Lake Tahoe. Conferences, conventions, year-round indoor concerts. Can’t wait to see it all happen at the Chateau project, hopefully sooner than later.
I just drove past the Chateau area and it does look much better than the rickety old fence thats been there for the last 5 years. I agree with r4t, its much better than whats been there. I did notice the new fence that is up behind the Chateau, its all nice and attractive, covering up the mess in the back. I sure hope that it isnt destroyed with grafitti like hmmm thinks it might end up. Anyway, looking better down there at stateline.
