Livestock-killing black bear euthanized

A 6-year-old male black bear was put down Friday by Nevada Department of Wildlife officials becuase it had killed livestock in Genoa.

On April 29, a bear killed four goats inside an enclosure in Genoa. A trap was set and a bear was caught, but it could not be determined if the bear that had been captured had killed the livestock.

Because a positive identification of the offending bear could not be made, the bear in the trap, wearing ear tag Yellow No. 43 was taken to an area about 80 miles south of Gardnerville for release.

The bear first received it identifying ear tag in March 2013 when it was captured near a lambing area in Jacks Valley.

Yellow No. 43 returned to Genoa this past week, punched a hole in the side of a small barn and entered the enclosure, killing two goats, according to NDOW.

This bear was caught in a NDOW trap July 18 and then euthanized.

A bear doing bear things gets killed. I feel like to a farmer, losing 2 goats to nature is the cost of doing business. Make a better enclosure. To kill a bear for doing what a bear does is horrible. The drought is starving our wildlife and then we kill our wildlife for being wild. Did the bear kill a human? Did he walk into a McDonald’s and try to steal the fake meat out of the walk-in? No, he ate an animal in a wimpy enclosure and now he can’t be a roaming nomadic black bear anymore. The human species is pretty lame. Too bad the value of two animals is worth killing a third. FYI people, nails are not bear proof. If you want to protect your livestock, nails are not the solution. You know what is bear proof? Euthanasia

Perhaps the “bear whisperers” hereabouts could explain to their friends and partners that, appearances to the contrary notwithstanding, they’re not the senior predators ’round here. Bears need to be bears, but if they expect to live among humans they’re going to have to learn the rules. One of which might be that killing goats being raised by and for humans is neither acceptable nor healthy.

Meanwhile, some will die and no longer breed – which is pretty much how evolution works. These guys aren’t big furry neighbors, they’re competitors. And they know it, even if some humans are too dumb to see it.
