Stateline casino revenue keeps declining

image_pdfimage_print

Stateline casinos were a drain on the overall July gaming revenue numbers for Nevada.

July is often a good month for Stateline because of tourists coming to town for Fourth of July and the American Century Championship. With schools starting in August, it is now considered the busiest summer month for the area.

Compared to 2013, the South Shore casinos were down 22 percent to $25 million.

North Shore casinos were up slightly last month compared to the prior year at $3.5 million – a 5.3 percent increase.

The $931 million win for the state was a 0.65 increase from July 2013, the Nevada Gaming Control Board said Aug. 28.

From what I’ve heard the smaller hotel revenue in SLT was up this summer. Maybe the tourists aren’t gambling as much.

Casino gaming down again yet everyone who has a business says how great things were. Mmmmmm. Other than the 4th of July and concert events at Harvey’s, I am not convinced we were that busy versus other years.

The concert series cements the fact that its all about events. Marquee events that give people a reason to come up to Tahoe even when the weather is not scorching in Sac and Reno. I visited the Farmer’s Market on Ski Run three times and the Hot August night event on Ski Run and from what I saw and heard from the vendors, it was a disappointing turn out.

We need more annual music and sporting events to get folks to book in advance and make Tahoe an annual trip. Not rocket science.

When criminal activity is systemic in government facilities, maybe the illegal activities are doing fine and the bills are getting paid.

It’s been a great summer for business and South Lake Tahoe is turning the economic corner. There is no doubt that guest traffic was up noticeably. I think the casino take being down might be indicative of our guests gambling less and spending more time with family and recreational activities. All good things…unless of course you happen to own a casino.

Internet gaming. 48 states with some form of legalized gaming.

The chances of Tahoe, or even Nevada, seeing any more large rises in gaming revenue is slim to none.

is not this gaming revenue bused upon gaming wins, could not it have been because the guest were winning more, not because less people were ganbling?

    No.

Well it has been a real good Summer for just about any business I’ve talked to. So when I’ve stated that I wish Caesars would sell either Harrah’s or Harveys cause I didn’t want our town to have to be dragged down by that soon to be bankrupt co., I was sort of wrong.

I still wish they’d spin off at least one of them. But our town is doing just fine even as that ship keeps sinking!

And the #’s do reflect Harrah’s/ Harveys business, as the other 2 casinos (and great there’ll soon be a 3rd!) are doing much better than these Stateline as a group #’s.

Evidence that LTVA’s marketing program stinks.

  10. cosa pescado says - Posted: August 28, 2014

LTVA’s marketing, or at least their PR skills are amazing. Remember how they whipped up the frenzy about the fireworks and had most people angry at the people reporting the trash instead of those who created the trash? Absolutely brilliant. Had I been a chamber member I could have locked down all of the contacts that supplied the angry mob with pitchforks and torches. I am currently unable to sell torches because of permits. They want a 3 day ‘cooling down’ period for the purchaser of the torch and mandatory fire safety training. So now I just sell hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and rebar at http://www.DIYmobtorch.com.

    Cosa,

Those first 4 sentences are about as spot on as anything I’ve ever read here on LTN!!

(Is this the same person I’d really gotten into it with in the past? Am I?) I’m sure we’ll get into it again in the future, but you nailed it there!!

And you know I recall seeing Harrah’s/Harveys GM, John Coster, (you know the guy that fires anyone on his staff, even if they’ve worked there for over 20 yrs., who causes even the slightest of problems for his beloved/brings underage women into drink at the casino, Ben Roethlisburger!) on the Reno News being part of the post July 4th Beach Cleanup Crew.

Well good for him, seriously, for getting down to the beach to help out! But too bad the GM doesn’t know how to bring gaming business to our town!

The predictions on the decline of gaming become a self-fulfilling prophecy when most of the clientele takes advantage of already-bought “weeks” of time-share. . .

As it becomes apparent nationally that consumer confidence needs a ‘boost’, people exercising their “weeks” can enjoy Tahoe without spending much (in their mind) as the ‘stay’ is mostly subject to ‘service fee’ revenue versus the spending of real ‘occupancy’ money.

They therefore cannot get a ‘boost’ from an industry losing confidence in itself, accepting as they do an event-at-a-time, vs a real & substantial marketing campaign, created for a place deserving of it. . .

There has always been a euphemistic quality to gaming, which “events” only serve, but we as a ‘place’ are still absent an identity above & beyond our ‘given’ (& taken for granted) beauty. . .

    There’s still some major disconnects…to be fulfilled. . .

I think it was the “Tahoe South ” idea that has backfired ! I still don’t know where Tahoe South is and I’ve lived here 30 years. I tried to find it out in Hope Valley but all I saw were tourist who were also searching for Tahoe South.
I live in South Lake Tahoe, don’t screw with the name !
