Lake Valley Fire Protection District is putting on an educational forum on Measure H on Oct. 8 from 5:30-7pm at Fire Station 7 at 2211 Keetak St in Meyers.

Measure H is on the Nov. 4 ballot. It is a special flat rate parcel tax for properties served by the Lake Valley Fire Protection District to fund the following programs: wildfire prevention and suppression programs, the Angora Peak Fire Crew, and equipment and facilities repair and replacement.

The district serves the California side of the South Shore outside of the South Lake Tahoe city limits, east to the state Line, north to Emerald Bay, south to Pickett’s Junction in Alpine County, and west to Twin Bridges.

We already pay a $20 Lake Valley fee. Now they want $120 fee, AND we pay $135 state mandated fee for CalFire.
Every government agency wants us to volunteer to give ’em MORE money. Where are WE supposed to get this magic money? Are the tax-payers ATMs? No wonder so many private sector workers are leaving California. The public sector is bleeding us dry.
I’m not saying the cause isn’t noble. Those are things we need. But what exactly IS the state doing with all the “general” tax money that is supposed to pay for all this stuff? Somebody’s gotta be living pretty well on other people’s money.

I will be voting no. We already have a Lake Valley fee on top of the property tax we pay and the 150 dollar cal fire fee. School bonds, gas taxes, trash rates, STPUD going up, and sales tax may make a jump.

And I’m sorry but a government funded hand crew can never do the fuel reduction work a private company could do. Look at all the fuel reduction work the USFS has done this year alone.

I glad I live in the county because I feel Lake Valley is a far better Fire department than…. But I’m not into more taxes. How about LVFD get into Governor Browns face and demand some of those rural fire “fees” we all in the county have been paying.

Thank you for your post. We are sure others share your concerns. We hope that you will attend the forum. Please allow us to clarify just a few things here.

Dogula – The $20 you are currently paying will be removed and the new charge will be $120. Without the $100 increase, the Fire District will be forced to end the fire crew program and permanently lay off 20 firefighters.

Tahoe78 – If you are referring to the mechanical treatments recently completed, you are correct, a government funded hand crew can’t match that. No crews can match the fine work conducted by these local mechanical contractors. Unfortunately, we can’t get mechanical equipment everywhere. Many of the Fire District’s programs support private crews and will continue to support private crews if Measure H is passed.

Bill Swim – Thank you for your kind words. The Fire District has argued and will continue to argue for a portion of the SRA Fees. We hope they are successful. In fact, the ballot measure is written so that Measure H is a maximum of $120 and the Fire District will reduce the amount in August of every year if they are successful in obtaining SRA funds. The Fire District Board is fiscally conservative. In 1993 an assessment was passed but let go in 1994 when it was determined the Fire District could maintain adequate levels of service without collecting the assessment.

We hope to see you at the forum!

After speaking with some of the fire fighters on Angora Peak I am happy to vote yes on Measure H. I have seen the benefit of the Angora Peak fuels reductions projects first hand, and I love the free chipping program. I understand that we have run out of emergency federal funding and now need to take responsibility for our own community fire wise. I also understand that the CalFire SRA fee is a completely unrelated State tax that is clearly failing. I support local control over fire fighting and believe that we should all invest in these proven programs before we have to endure another disaster like the Angora Peak Fire.

There is 3 agencies in south lake tahoe/meyers that already do projects like this:

    Forestry Service
    Tahoe Conservancy
    California Conservation Corps.

Little do we know they probably used our tax dollars to make the “YES on Measure H” signs, probably used our tax dollars to sit in front of liras to lobby the public.

one word comes to mind when it comes to this measure
