SNC moves dirt without TRPA permission
By Associated Press
Environmental regulators at Lake Tahoe say Sierra Nevada College failed to obtain a permit necessary to move dirt and protect plants while building a new home in Incline Village for the school president.
As a result, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency issued a cease and desist order on Oct. 8 for the college to immediately stop work, except to stabilize the site and prepare it for winter, agency spokesman Tom Lotshaw said.
“It’s a minor violation,” he said, adding that the agency’s Governing Board would have to approve any penalty beyond a possible $1,002 filing fee.
A filing fee for the grading permit costs $501, but agency regulations call for doubling that amount if there’s a violation.
The college plans to submit an application for the house, which will incorporate garden modifications, to the agency and Washoe County in December, said Dianne Severance, the college’s director of grants and sponsored programs.
Lotshaw said the violation will not determine the outcome of the college’s application.
Lotshaw said the college moved and mounded on-site about 20 cubic yards of dirt. Any project within the basin that moves more than 7 cubic yards of dirt requires a grading permit from the agency.
The college currently leases a house for the president about a mile from campus. The planned one-floor, 3,000-square-foot structure will host events for students, faculty and staff, and existing and potential donors.
College president Lynn Gillette said a donation made by an anonymous individual is covering a large majority of the $1.6 million project cost, including garden improvements.
Hey TRPA, what about the Keys Marina criminal who dumped sewage into our lake and tore up raw land to create a parking lot. WHY ARE YOU NOT DEALING WITH HIM?!?! You have quite the selective enforcement you pigs!
Is it just me, or is watching the TRPA in action like watching episodes of The Simpsons?
Gaspen Aspen, More than likely, nothing will happen to the owner of Tahoe Keys Marina for his numerous illegal activities. Selective enforcement is rampant around here. It all depends on who you know! OLS
You’re absolutely right, OLS. Some contractors in this town get away with NEVER doing their winter bmp’s, EVER, while others get nailed on October 16. Some contractors in this town manage to buy properties with ZERO coverage, then build 4K square foot McMansions on them. It’s remarkable.
As long as you’ve got enough money, and know which palms to grease, you’re golden.
What about all the digging at the Edgewood Golf Course ? What are they doing and do they have a permit ?
Steven, I would imagine that’s the beginning of the hotel and 4 plexes that are planned for Edgewood Golf Course.
Lots of building around the lake for the next several years. Are they using local contractors? Doubtful!!!
OLS
Edgewood has permits Steven, do your homework before you post, I know that’s not much fun for you. OLS you should do a little homework too, so sick of some of the stuff people say.
OLS,
I’m talking about the digging by hwy 50. They aren’t building there are they ?
onetime,
This is my homework !
ONE TIME and Steven, Sometime ago I read about a planned hotel and 4 plexes going in at Edgewood. I also recall reading, the golf course altered a a few fairways to make room for the new buildings.
So who knows? FORE!!! OLS
Steven my guess is that is part of the hole alignment needed for the hotel they are putting which will be by the clubhouse. I would think that they would not be so stupid to do that much digging without a permit and a ok to dig past Oct 15
