Clean Tahoe dealing with bears in trash

Clean Tahoe has responded to a record-breaking number of animal-in-trash incidents in the past month.

In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 the South Shore nonprofit cleaned and issued courtesy notices for 265 animal-in-trash incidents, and issued warning notices to more than 200 additional animal-in-trash incidents. In the last year 603 yards of litter and debris were picked up. That’s more than six football fields of trash.

In addition to general roadside litter, field crew responded to 153 illegal dumping incidents and picked up:

  • 112 pieces of large furniture
  • 131 pieces of small furniture
  • 121 mattresses
  • 256 TVs/computer monitors
  • 36 tires
  • 24 appliances.

During the September river cleanup 1,366 pounds of trash and recyclables were collected. Items included:

  • Cigarette butts: 3,691
  • Beverage bottles (glass and plastic): 274
  • Food wrappers (candy, chips, etc.): 950
  • Bottle caps (plastic and metal): 1,006
  • Plastic bags: 244
  • Straws: 195
  • Take-out containers: 101
  • Plastic lids: 178
  • Cups and plates: 211
  • Balloons: 53
  • Pieces of construction material: 75
  • Tobacco wrappers/packaging: 81.

Volunteers also found part of car bumper, kitchen appliances, a dining room chair, rebar, a degraded buoy weight, and other large items.

Call 530.544.4210 if neighbors are leaving trash out or fill out this form. Field crews will clean the mess and provide educational materials for the property owner about securing their trash appropriately. Repeat offenders will be referred to the proper code enforcement agency.

Thank you CLEAN TAHOE for all you do. I hope you gave the trashy people fines and make them install bear box trash holders.

Thanks for the info and that form. We’ve taken old tv’s, sofas, even a washer that was left on the side of the road near our house. It’s amazing what pigs people can be. Once or twice the transfer station has let us drop off for free when we told them we picked it up off the road, but sometimes we’ve had to pay to dump the stuff. Some folks just think they’re entitled to have the world pick up after them. . .

Go figure they don’t have that authority that is why they must referred it to the city or count code enforcement officer, who does have the authority to issue fines though I don’t think they have the authority to force them to buy bear boxes that may be a court function

Clean Tahoe was one of the better programs started in the city. Underfunded and understaffed, oh yeah! But they are making a positve difference in our town!!!! They’ve helped me out several times when I’ve called, and all with positive results!!! Thank you Clean Tahoe!
Keep up the good work! OLS

One form of trash that seems to be overlooked are the endless old GARAGE SALE TODAY signs left on poles all over town. I hate seeing these ugly blight signs left. The people that put them up must drive by them everyday and are so lazy they cant take them down. I would like to see a vity or county ordinance that would put a fine on people that leave these signs up. If there is an address than they would know where to leave the violation. Maybe it would get those lazy people to take their signs down. Thats my gripe for the day…
