The shops at the Y used to be fun to visit…. it is a ghost town now. Sorry to hear the last few oldies are also closing. The City needs to do some creative thinking (incentives) to help the great retail space recover. Maybe an outside seasonal ice-rink with fire-pits and seating (ala/ San Francisco) and some interesting eating places (bistros who have take-away as well as sit-down); a great Christmas store for the season; a small stage for another “town commons” – Christmas caroling, summer events; a horse-drawn sleigh from that corner to the back woods taking folks to dinner spots…. (Passateri’s, Ernies, etc.). This area could be really great…
Irish, really, it isn’t up to the city to create business for anybody. That’s private property. It’s up to the property owners to sink or swim. Every time the city involves itself in business, the chosen few benefit while everybody on the outskirts of the old boys’ club gets mowed over.
I agree that the little shopping center needs to reinvent itself. The ‘outlet mall’ concept is horribly outdated and that’s why businesses are leaving. That and the fact that the city has spent gazillions benefitting the other side of town, and left the Y area to the low income crowd.
They choose, we lose.
They Y has two new shiny objects to attract people. TJ Maxx and Bev Mo will get people to the area. The Kmart needs to go across the street. Take out the outlets and replace them with a Target. That would keep some people from going off the hill to shop. Add a new restaurant at the Y. The city could help by giving a tax break for a locally owned eatery to go into that area.
