Fewer El Dorado County grapes to harvest
El Dorado County produced fewer wine grapes than the last three years, but the quality is said to be high.
Significant spring rains followed by consistent, slightly above average temperatures during the growing season marked one of the earliest harvests on record.
“The quality of this year was outstanding,” Josh Bendick of Holly’s Hill Vineyards said in a press release. “2014 was the shortest harvest we have ever had. Although we’ve started picking earlier in previous years, we were done earlier this year.“
There are more than 70 wineries and nearly 2,000 vineyard acres in the county.
The drought is a larger contributor less tonnage.
Wildland fires in the area burned on the fringes of the wine region.

It was a crazy year for growing anything. My lettuce, what little I got, bolted. The carrots took extra long. But the peas were happy and long-producing. . .
I admire the people who grow our food more and more each year.
Dogula, It was a rather strange year for growing. Got off to a slow start but then as it warmed up, the garden started doing pretty good. Snow peas, string beans, zucchini , 4 varities of lettuce, cabbage and all the rest of my little green buddies did okay to. Carrots were super small as I didn’t thin them and the green onions stayed small as well. Looking forward to next year to add some new things!
Looking forward to planting next spring at the beginning of winter??? Ya know, crazy OLS.
