WASHINGTON — A new federal survey has found that e-cigarette use among teenagers has surpassed the use of traditional cigarettes as smoking has continued to decline. Health advocates say the trend for e-cigarette use is dangerous because it is making smoking seem normal again. They also worry it could lead to an increase in tobacco smoking, though the new data do not show that.

The survey, released Tuesday by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, measured drug and alcohol use this year among middle and high school students across the country. More than 41,000 students from 377 public and private schools participated. It is one of several such national surveys, and the most up-to-date.

It was the first time this survey measured e-cigarette use, so there were no comparative data on the change over time. Other surveys have shown e-cigarette use among middle and high school students to be much lower, but increasing fast.

No matter what you are smoking its a disgusting habit and should be strongly discouraged. The side effects of E cigs will become just as bad as they are studied and time has passed and society sees the negative side of smoking liquid nicotine. If my child were turning towards this vice I would tell him the same thing I would tell him if it were A traditional cigarette. They are disgusting and they will do you alot of damage. Just say NO to smoking anything.

‘The side effects of E cigs will become just as bad’
That’s a real stretch. There is a 0% chance that they are not harmful at all. And a 0% chance that they are as bad as inhaling combusted plant matter.
People are going to continue to be attracted to nicotine, harm reduction will be more effective than ‘just say no’.

Got to agree with the Fish on this one. E-cigs are not ‘smoking’. It’s inhaled vapor. Not smoke. And as far as drugs go, nicotine is pretty benign. I am baffled by the negative reception the e-cigs are getting. Why NOT allow them in public places? They don’t have any way of causing second hand harm.
    People are hysterical.
    No, I don’t smoke or use e-cigs.
