A Placerville man is going to prison for tax fraud.

Thomas W. Stringfellow, 55, was sentenced Dec. 18 to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay $687,182 in restitution for willfully making false tax returns.

According to court documents, from 2006-10, Stringfellow underreported his business income on tax returns by more than $1.1 million, and underreported his personal income on tax returns by more than $1 million.

Stringfellow owned New Horizon Painting, and rather than depositing all of the business checks into the appropriate accounts, he cashed some of the checks and did not report those amounts as income.

In total, Stringfellow’s underreporting of his business income and his personal income led to a tax loss of more than $687,000.

Damn. That’s a lot of money for a painter!

Ms Dog, I rarely agree with you on this forum, but, perhaps making amends, I do now.

That’s a hell of a lot for a painter, even one practicing his art in Placerville. But perhaps that’s the local market down there.

Thomas Kinkade painted houses and all sorts of structural visions and sold them right there on main street. Hardly anyone familiar with the genre thought he was very skilled, but he made lots of money off the deal – and isn’t that what our economy is all about?

Bill Watterson, Stephen Pastis and Berkeley Breathed have made pretty good money off their artistic renditions but they have also had the good sense to peddle them to distributors who, like sports agents, have the unique ability to sell bagels to cops while talking their way out of a parking ticket. And who ever heard of a cop eating a bagel?

So rather than questioning, we need to admire Stringfellow who apparently succeeded in screwing his customers, and only slipped up when he tried to screw the IRS. Which very likely keeps a close eye on most goings on in P’ville. As well they should, speaking as a taxpayer.
