18 bears killed by Nevada hunters

By Associated Press

Nevada hunters killed 18 black bears in 2014, the most in the hunt’s four-year history.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife says 12 of the bruins were killed in the Pinenut Mountains near Carson City. Others were killed in the Carson Range, Pine Grove Mountains and Washoe Valley, all in Northern Nevada.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports dogs were used in all but four successful hunts in 2014.

A total of 57 bears have been killed by hunters since the hunt began in 2011. A maximum of 20 bears can be killed each season.

The hunt has drawn strong opposition from the start, with critics saying there are not enough bears in arid Nevada to support it.

Though I hunt, I choose not to hunt bears. I don’t agree with using dogs. It’s part of the American way to hunt. Wild game is a million times better than the crap bought in a market.

How many coyotes will killed over the weekend in that lame gathering of hunters ?

  6. Dogula says - Posted: January 5, 2015

Gaspen, the picture used is not from a bear hunt. I’m pretty sure it’s a photo of the bear dog chasing a bear back into the wilderness after it was released from a nuisance bear trap.

  7. Gaspen Aspen says - Posted: January 5, 2015

    I think you’re right Dogula.

Killing bears, coyotes and all other types of wild life. Where does it end? Or does it?
I have racoons and cottontail rabbits in my garden. Do I shoot them? I have chickarees in my firewood pile in the backyard, do I shoot them? Mice got into the engine compartment of my old truck. Do I shoot them or poison them so the cats can eat poisoned mice? What about the barking dogs in the neighborhood(mine included), shoot them?
Lets take it a step further. If someone sees a kid walking down the street and the person with the gun thinks the kid MIGHT be a gangster or drug dealer, does that kid deserve to be shot? What about just regular folks? They might be on the receiveing end of bullet because of their political beliefs or there thoughts on women’s right to an abortion , or how about wage equality and so many other of womens struggle in this unfair society. If someone speaks out do they have to be shot because someone disagrees?
If you’re worried about your cat getting eaten by a coyote keep the cat indoors and build a coyote proof enclosure in the backyard. The good folks behind me did and it works great! If you’re concerned about the bears getting into the neighbors trash and if talking with the neighbor does’nt get you anywhere call the proper athorities and the bear problem will be resolved.
Yes, I am a gun owner, but at some point we need to stop the killing!!! OLS

Man has been a hunter and gatherer of food for thousands of years, what is changed is the market has become the food source for many. The question is if people of any continent have a right to hunt, manage wildlife, and eat meat? In the USA, hunters provide millions upon millions into the billions through taxes and license fees to protect and conserve wildlife habitat unlike many people and groups who want everything banned who don’t. Bear populations are very high and in no danger and people are legally exercising their right to hunt while licensed to do so. It is interesting that alpha predators like wolves, who were brought back into areas they haven’t been in for a hundred years, are on the increase and wiping out entire herds of deer and elk across the west and many think it is o.k. because it is a natural event, not realizing it is a man-made event. The same goes for other predators like the Mountain Lion well known for deadly attacks and over protected to the point of endangering people. All populations of predators have a limited capacity of food sources and over population becomes dangerous for people, pets, and the environment.

That’s crazy… In 10 years there won’t be any bears to hunt over there. What do you do with a bear anyway after you kill it.? Eat it. Make a necklace… Come on…, they can’t taste good… Killing just to kill. I think all these guys have small Peter syndrome and need to show off there big guns to compensate. Insane!!!

  11. Steve says - Posted: January 5, 2015

Leave the bears alone. They’re fascinating to watch. Only camouflaged cowards shoot and kill anything that moves.

  12. nature bats last says - Posted: January 5, 2015

Justanass seems to be the only one thinking this is a worthy endeavor. Imagine that!
Id bet a million bucks not one of those cowards eats their bear, and I dont mean as dog food.
I wish the bears could shoot back at those COWARDS. skin and feed their sorry carcases to the coyotes cuz not one of them would be worth the trouble.

Strange and angry answers by people with no idea of their own species history which is common today. Ask the Indians why they have hunted for thousands of years and listen carefully to the answer and people might learn something. There is a balance in nature that has no understanding for people who don’t know it. Many of these type of people today who want to give all authority and rights to government to over-protect wild animals cause their demise by thinking the animals will manage themselves until there are mass starvations and disease and road kill. This also promotes further terrible ideas like over-protecting predators which are dangerous and even some feed wild predators thinking they are pets, until everything is out of balance and then the real trouble begins.

    To What the says:

Have you ever tasted Bear meat?! Don’t jump to un-tested conclusions unless you have tried it. I’ll give you that TAHOE bears might not taste good. They eat trash and will taste like garbage. But the ones that are eating truly wild food will taste good.

I have never hunted for “trophy” and eat everything I hunt. I have serious issues with “trophy” hunters who don’t eat the animals they hunt. THAT is simply wrong. But as Justice says, mankind has been hunting for thousands of years. Nothing wrong with hunting to enjoy NATURES bounty. Again, I choose to not hunt them. They are big medicine to me personally.

  15. BX2 says - Posted: January 5, 2015

    Well said Justice.

  16. Old Long Skiis says - Posted: January 5, 2015

Gaspen Aspen, I’ve eaten bear meat and it wasn’t too bad. A couple of guys I know got a predation permit to shoot a bear that was causing problems in a neighborhood. They treed a bear with dogs and shot it out of the tree. I got some of the meat and that was that. The one guy, an ol’ buddy of mine, had the hide tanned and turned it into a rug and kept some of the claws to be made into his necklace, which he wore untill his death.
So while I’m against killing wild animals, I guess for some, they think it’s alright. I don’t. Not anymore.I was a duck hunter for about a dozen years but I quit that “sport”. Just didn’t like it any more. Some people can change their view on somethings. I did. OLS

  17. Gaspen Aspen says - Posted: January 5, 2015

OLS: I have had bear once at a friends house. It was from the Western slope here. It was good but a bit greasy for my taste. My main hunt is for Venison, (and some upland birds) since we have no Elk.

I admire your late friend and his use of the bear. Sounds like he paid homage in his own way.

  18. Tahoehunter says - Posted: January 5, 2015

There were 1317 bears killed in CA this passed season, all without dogs, several were taken in the basin that I know of, I did not take one.
All the bear hunters I know eat the entire animal, most will have it made into burger, sausage, and jerky, trash eaters are not good, bears that eat Juniper berries taste the best….

  19. MH says - Posted: January 5, 2015

Old long skiis, lots of respect due to you. What the says, so true. Bears are Not to be trophy hunted, especially hunting with dogs. Why is this still happening?

  20. Hunter says - Posted: January 6, 2015

I hunt eat what I kill and enjoy the ethics art and the sport of it. I don’t like the trash talking about hunters, most are ethical and process and enjoy the meat. If you are a true vegetarian I can respect your personal choice, but don’t be a “I only eat fish” vegetarian my response is yeah fish don’t scream when you kill them! And if you are not a hunter and are an advocate against it don’t you dare wear leather soled shoes or a leather coat. Don’t order a hamburger or buy a plastic wrapped steak at the the butcher shop or some hot links at Costco. Don’t let someone else do your killing for you! Hail to the vegetarian and the hunter the true romantics that take a stand.

I have yet to hear from liberals who didn’t want some type of human behavior and freedom banned that they feel empowered to dislike and then want the authority of government to enforce it for them. This is the problem with a style of thinking so far removed from the history of our forefathers who lived off of wild game, fish, gardens and livestock and what many are returning to today because they want to know where their food is coming from and get away from added chemicals like BPA, preservatives, and hormones. This idea, of getting back to real food is like buying from Farmer’s Markets and reflects the principles and freedoms the country was founded upon as far as free choice goes.

  24. Gaspen Aspen says - Posted: January 6, 2015

K9…..are you strictly a vegetarian? You must be otherwise you are a hypocrite.
There is nothing senseless about hunting and eating the meat. You probably want all guns banned as well. I’m keeping all of mine in case your president and his Sharp-Tongue side kick succeed in starting a race war.

Liberals act out because they hate facts, the truth, and reality. They love fantasy that wild animals are friendly and should be protected until they attack, that their trips to In-n-Out don’t matter because they do the harvesting outside of their seeing it and emotions should decide science and habitat issues, along the lines of unicorns are real, Bill didn’t inhale, wasn’t impeached or disbarred and Hillary is in a real marriage and likes men, and Barry isn’t an anti-American agitator from Kenya with illegal relatives in the country.
