If it snows again, SLT ready to plow paths

South Lake Tahoe’s snow removal policy is to deploy snow plows when 3 inches of snow accumulates on roadways. Clearing of snow on roadways and city owned buildings and facilities is the primary purpose during a significant snow event.

This winter the city has launched a pilot program to include snow removal on class 1 bike paths as a secondary feature during a significant snow event.

Money from Measure R/S is available to contract snow removal services by Alpine Smith on the following paths:

· Both sides of Ski Run Boulevard.

· Eloise Avenue to Ponderosa Street (behind Motel 6).

· Harrison Avenue bike path to Lakeview Commons.

· Rubicon Trail to Tallac (behind Meek’s Lumber).

· Silver Dollar to Sussex Avenue (behind Fitness Evolution).

City staff will provide snow removal to the following Class 1 bike paths during a significant snow event when 3 inches of snow has fallen and after all roadways and city owned buildings and facilities have been cleared of snow.

· Al Tahoe Boulevard

· Campground by the Lake

· Lakeview Commons to Alta Mira

· Lyons Avenue

· Rufus Allen Boulevard

· Ski Run Bouleavard to Linear Park.

As a pilot program, the cost of providing these services will be evaluated by staff and it will determine if this is a feasible program that can be support in future fiscal years.

Anything to get their hands on that Measure S bike-trail maintenance fund. If it snows in feet, rather than the mentioned 3″, they won’t be able to keep up but they will certainly apply for the funds. The fund has been abused for years. Shameful.

Now lets get some snow, dag nabit!!!
We are hurtin’ for certain if we don’t get a decent dump of the white stuff. Take care and lets all hope for snow! Old Long Skiis

Dumbfounded: In what way has the fund been abused?

It was sold as four play fields for kids and turned into one field that has maintenance costs of about $80,000 per year.

  5. JoAnn Conner says - Posted: January 13, 2015

Dumbfounded: The bike trail maintenance fund is just that, not for the fields. The City contributed up to ten thousand to match bike trail maintenance funds. People use the bike paths all year round, riding their bikes, walking, and even wheelchair use.

Jo Ann, how about the bike path in front of the Al Tahoe Forest Homes neighborhood from Al Tahoe blvd north to the new Harrison Ave project. It runs in front of the fire station. That land was donated to the city by us homeowners from our HOA for the bike path and in return the City agreed to maintain it. Heavy use.

Exaggerated submissions for bike trail maintenance that was either not done, done poorly and done late. Although I am fully in support of the measure and the fund, bureaucracy has abused it in the past. Not sure about current practices, but past performance is the best indicator of future performance. Don’t presume to tell me about it, please.

Dumbfounded: I serve on the Recreation JPA and attend the Bicycle Committee meetings. I was not speaking to past practices, only to current. My question was to secure specifics. If you think it is being abused, please tell me how so it can be addressed. The next Recreation JPA meeting is Friday, January 23rd, at 9:00 am at the City Council Chambers. You are also welcome to share your thoughts or ask your questions at that time.

Atomic: thanks for the heads up; I’ll look into that issue.

JoAnn, thank you for your efforts. Obviously, I have chosen to attempt to remain anonymous. Certainly, you can understand that one cannot appear at a meeting, make allegations, count on the guilty to provide evidence of their wrongdoing and remain anonymous. Some of those are mutually exclusive. My comment suggests that those involved should look carefully at funding reimbursement requests. As regards this article, I feel that if there (hopefully) is heavy snowfall, the attempt to clear bike paths may be made, but will be inadequate due to the heavy snow. Will the money spent be responsible use of the taxpayers’ dollars? Admittedly, my viewpoint is a bit cynical, but I certainly have my reasons. Again, thanks for your concerns but I don’t believe that this is what the maintenance funds were intended for. This is simply another reason for the public to mistrust politicians. And rightly so.

Dumbfounded: I do understand your position. If you would like, you can create an email account that does not give away your name and send your concerns to jconner@cityofslt.us. Or, you may call my home phone from a blocked number at 530/544-7412 or my city phone at 530/318-6090. You may also write/type them and send them to me at 1901 Airport Road, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150. There need not be a return address or a signature/name – or use the name you have chosen here.I really would like to know your concerns, but I do understand your need to be private. I could address the answers on this site.

Atomic: I’m working on your answer. Do you happen to know the year the HOA donated that strip?

  13. JoAnn Conner says - Posted: January 31, 2015

Atomic: Yes, that path will be cleared. The listings are, we agreed, a little confusing. Look for the yellow stakes that mark the areas to be cleared.
