Earth records warmest winter on record
By Chris Dolce, Weather
The winter of 2014-15 was the warmest on record worldwide, according to the state of the climate report released by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration on Wednesday.
NOAA says that December through February – for meteorological record-keeping purposes, winter is defined as those three months in the Northern Hemisphere – was 1.42 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average for all land and ocean areas.
This tops the previous warmest winter of 2007 by 0.05 degrees Fahrenheit. Global temperature records are available for the period 1880-2015.
Yep, record heat in Western North America, Northern Europe, Central Russia, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. During the same period, land surface temps were 2.63F above the 20th Century average. The pictures of Glacial retreat are very telling.
So the records go back 135 years and how old is the earth, oh yeah billions of years old. That is where my skepticism of global warming comes in. Even if you take only the last 200,000 years people have been on the planet 135 years is a tiny speck of time and not enough by a long shot to say with so much certainty that humans are directly affecting the climate.
So says an anonymous post. Most climate scientists say otherwise
What Tahoe local is doing is called ‘moving the goal posts’. No amount of knowledge is good enough for them. Creationists, evolution deniers, etc employ the same cowardly tactic.
It is true that tye earth has been heating and cooling for its whole existence. I am not sure man is as responsible for it or can do enough to stop it, nor should we. The one ussue I have with the science is that much of the data have been manipulated so that the scientists can show the outcome they are looking for and what will get them more grant money for their university or program. I know this to be true from several people at UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley.
Walter, you have hit the nail squarely on the head.
+1.
Mr Reinthaler, are you implying that all climatic scientists worldwide are possibly doing the same thing that your sources tell you is happening at three universities here in Northern California? And could you provide some background as to your sources and how you have access to this information about what is going on with the grant process as it pertains to climatic scientists and their work at those universities?
I’m not trying to debate your statement, just interested in more info regarding it.
The notion that all of the climate scientists are colluding to alter the data on warming is just dumb.
Less about ‘ hitting the nail on the head’ , more like getting hit ON the head to believe that nonsense.
Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change. -Stephen Hawking
I would not reveal my sources since there is tremendous pressure on them if they let themselves be known. They would never work in the.community again. I am mot sayi g all scientists are in colusion but many are hell bent on looking for one outcome and not looking at all the possibilities. Data that does not fit the profile or outcome can be excluded from the experiment to get to an outcome that is wanted. I don’t doubt that the earth is warming, I doubt that it is all mans fault or that we can fix it. What would all the scientists have said 300,000 years ago when we were in an ice age? Mother Earth is in charge and she will do as she pleases.
Mr Reinthaler, I didn’t ask you to reveal your sources, just provide info that would lend credibility to YOUR assertion of what they told you by virtue of giving a general information as to how they know this and how it was given to you. In other words, if you heard this from an undergrad student that you happen to know it might come across as less powerful, as opposed to knowing and being in contact with actual grad students working in the field of climate science. Without some background your statement is nothing more than casual hearsay.
Walter +1,
The science seems to always being changing which might be a good thing.
If you look at how the vast majority of scientists jumped on the saturated fat and cholesterol band wagon for the last forty five years you can see that it is possible for consciousness to be wrong.
Even the green crowd has to admit the response has been a joke.
I would like to see the carbon footprint to produce, transport and install the concrete sidewalks. Don’t forget the hundreds of thousands of idling cars and trucks stuck in traffic.
If people really wanted to be green they would walk on the dirt. What about the green high school that expanded its parking lot for a declining student base.
My favorite is STPUD paying people to remove their lawns while the City and Cal-trans plant miles of it next to the lake.
Welcome to a new day and some fresh air.
So nice to read by Walter R. what I experienced first hand.
I was a student/researcher at UCSC working under a professor on a project that we were to collect data to support an ecological end game. At then my young age of 24, I thought this was backward but was told his grant was for proving an issue and we were to collect data for that purpose ~ he would fill in the blanks ~ ?? This opened my eyes along time ago to the funny business that goes on in universities as far as science goes. I, as others, wanted our grades and degrees, so you march to the tune ~ unwittingly!!
With these Global Warming/Climate Change scare tactics unraveling daily, I constantly question why so much of the earths major natural occurances are not even mentioned ~ any one hear of volcanos?? Have any idea what they put out with one ~ just one explosion???
By its constitution, the IPCC has a hopeless conflict of interest. Its mandate is to consider only the human causes of global warming, not the many natural causes changing the climate for billions of years. We don’t understand the natural causes of climate change any more than we know if humans are part of the cause at present. If the IPCC did not find humans were the cause of warming, or if it found warming would be more positive than negative, there would be no need for the IPCC under its present mandate. To survive, it must find on the side of the apocalypse.
The IPCC should either have its mandate expanded to include all causes of climate change, or it should be dismantled.
As usuall, follow the MONEY!!
NOAA has no incentive to make this stuff up. They report winter 2015 to be the warmest on record globally. Yes human response to global warming has been ineffective/insignificant. But the denial of anthropogenic warming is fading, most people aren’t that stupid
I beg to differ. I think most people fall into the “GRUBBER EXPLAINATION” ~ The general public will by it hook line and sinker, they are Stupid.
TahoeLocal. Scientists have studied CO2 levels directly via Antarctic ice cores to 800,000 years. Scientists have studied CO2 levels in rock samples going back millions of years. During the rise of Homo Sapiens, CO2 levels had been fairly steady at about 225ppm. The recent rise of CO2 to 400ppm is a sudden event Geologically speaking.
Walter Reinthaler says “I am not sure…” then goes on the blame the Scientists for the data. That’s a neat trick Walt, does it work for Doctors that say someone has Breast Cancer or Diabetes too? Blame the Doctors for the diagnosis? Are you unsure of that as well?
Marlene. Actually, Scientist called Volcanologists have found that Volcanoes do not produce that much CO2 Globally; .2 Billion Tons versus 3.5 Billion Tons or more from Homo Sapien activities.
I suggest if you want to follow the money Marlene, follow the money from the Fossil Fuels Industry. The Fossil Fuels Industries are using the same “blame the Scientists/Doctors” approach that the Tobacco Companies used for decades to hide the effects of cigarettes smoking.
Interesting that it seems so easy for some to disregard agenda in some instances while simultaneously treating another agenda with the highest regard. It is absurd, in my humble opinion, to believe that only climate change scientists are guilty of skewing data when the energy sector has spent so much money to skew data in another direction. As you say, Rock, it is simply a case of “follow the money”.
I don’t find the “if you disagree with me, you are stupid” meme to be particularly compelling.
Maybe a new term is in order. Maybe we should call those researchers who are funded by oil company marketing damage control departments ‘status-quo advocates’ or sunscreen fashionista heroes, given that even they now admit that climate is changing.
Industrialization and fossil fuel use are the 800 lb gorilla in the room(you know, the one wearing the canary from the coal mine as a condom for the golden goose it’s shtupping to death).
‘Status-quo advocates’? Because they work for the private sector? You don’t think government scientists are unaware of which side of their bread the butter lies? Why would you assume that government scientists must be more honest than private scientists? Follow the money? The Federal government wants to tax us all into oblivion for carbon mitigation! That’s a bucket-o-money right there!! All going into the hands of the chosen few who follow the leftist dogma. Oh, but the politicians would NE-E-E-EVER try to influence the data.
Right.
Obviously it’s time to stop paying people to have children.
I understand that Libertarians find altruism ‘quaint’, but the majority of mature human beings still consider it a virtue. The private sector is no longer beholden to an ideal, nor are they tethered to charters…or I should say that the ‘ideal’ that the private sector holds to is ‘increased short term profits for shareholders and minimal responsibility assumed for ones actions.
Of course politicians will try to peddle influence-it’s what they do. Which is why Corporate donations to politicians AND scientists AND universities needs to be made public knowledge, and a point of discussion. And limited.
Dog, Please, you are way out of your league and century on this. Which Scientists were correct about Tobacco Smoke being hazardous to your health… the private sector Tobacco Company Scientists or the Government Scientists.
I think the problem is that some people are so ignorant that they can’t imagine a person being dedicated to science and knowledge.
And the whole ‘follow the money’ routine is really funny because she won’t apply that to the ‘science’ the deniers.
And there is no way I am going to believe marlene was a scientist. I guess it is possible to be educated and fall for pseudoscience but it is highly unlikely.
“The one ussue I have with the science is that much of the data have been manipulated”
One example please.
There is so much evidence that corroborates other research that researchers would have to ‘thumb the scales’ of everything.
“I would not reveal my sources since there is tremendous pressure on them if they let themselves be known”
BS
“any one hear of volcanos?? Have any idea what they put out with one ~ just one explosion???”
“The general public will by it hook line and sinker, they are Stupid.”
Oh the sweet irony….
We will learn a lot about marlenes academic integrity and honesty when she responds to : “Marlene. Actually, Scientist called Volcanologists have found that Volcanoes do not produce that much CO2 Globally; .2 Billion Tons versus 3.5 Billion Tons or more from Homo Sapien activities. ”
I predict they will continue on as usual, keep bringing up volcanoes, and call people stupid.
Here is a little info on the comparison of Volcanic CO2 emmissions to anthropogenic (human usage)and the resulting CO2 by product. Might be wise to reasses your understanding.

Also, the mention of “Being Grubbered” was to remind all of how those in ‘Control’ of the $$$$$$ ~ the political elite and their minions, look upon we of the unwashed masses.
NOT TO CALL ANYONE STUPID.
Feed them anything, no one will bother to investigate it, read it, study about the validity because of whom is producing the info.
It is long overdue that we question EVERYTHING coming from these institutions of HIGHER LEARNING. They have always been fronts/validators for the power hungry!
Wow. You guys consider humans SO vile and distrustful, yet the humans who run and work for the government are exempted from that judgement. How can anybody have a discussion here?
Unbelievable.
Humans emit 100 times as much CO2….

The data is right there in front of you and you *choose* to remain ignorant.
There are plenty of people who choose to remain ignorant about so much in this world. Seems a disproportinate high number are blog trolls on LTN. Go figure…
“Seems a disproportinate high number are blog trolls on LTN” Like you and your liberal cronies? No offense, but you’re the one trolling here buddy. You haven’t added anything logical to this thread.
You people should just take a break from flaming on LTN all day. If you didn’t spend so much time behind your keyboard warring about absolutely irrelevant things on this site, you might have a more logical world view and a less negative life. You know that saying “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”? Just replace nice with logical and apply it to this blog and I guarantee there will be less flaming and stupid comments here.
“But now,” says the Once-ler, “now that you’re here, the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear. UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
― Dr. Seuss, The Lorax
Sometimes I feel helpless when faced with the change needed to save the earth. 4 billion people, is 3 billion too many. I love how confident people are that we are not destroying our planet. Just cary on with our coal power, gasoline, fracking, deforesting, over fishing and expansion. What could go wrong?
I’m riding my bike to work this week (with the exception of Monday.)
‘ Like you and your liberal cronies? No offense, but you’re the one trolling here buddy. You haven’t added anything logical to this thread.’
Did you really just jump in to trash liberals and mask it in some speech about logic and decency? “No offense” is french for ‘f you are your horse’. You mean lots of offense. Is your issue really the lack of logical contribution? The second to last person who deserves that is naturebats. What about the people who have a world view that is inaccurate by a factor of 100? Or the ones who accuse researchers of fraud with nothing to back it up, or the young earth creationists who has the gall to attempt to mock adults.
Ignorance is offensive. Mindless, willful ignorance. Use whatever foul language you want, nothing is more revolting than willful ignorance and scientific illiteracy because it is an actual threat to society.
Welcome to Costco, I love you.
Welcome to Costco, I love you.
“The second to last person who deserves that is nature bats” hehe. So who is last? Yourself? You shouldn’t be so quick to think yourself perfect. Nature, did you catch what duke just did?
“There are plenty of people who choose to remain ignorant about so much in this world. Seems a disproportinate high number are blog trolls on LTN. Go figure…” What’s logical about this? It’s clear that all he is trying to do is launch a personal attack on all people who don’t agree with him. It is implied that anyone who doesn’t agree with him is “ignorant” and a “blog troll.”
I don’t mean any offense to anyone, I was just trying to point out the hypocrisy in this comment.
“What about the people who have a world view that is inaccurate by a factor of 100”
“nothing is more revolting than willful ignorance and scientific illiteracy”
Just because you think their world view is inaccurate, doesn’t mean it is. Science is about unbiasedly looking at data to determine the correct world view. Unfortunately, there are some people who will pick a world view and stick to it no matter what data suggests that it is wrong. Everyone, conservative and liberal, does this to some extent. The key is to minimize this effect.
You accuse me of “willful ignorance” which is not true. I believe in science, but what I hate to see is people who take the ” We’ve got the theory, now we just need the evidence” attitude. You have to look at the evidence for both sides.
I never used any foul language, so I don’t know what you’re talking about.
I realize this is a controversial subject, but I think it shouldn’t be too much to ask that everyone keep it classy. Name-calling and false accusations don’t make you look intelligent.
greengrass
Oh, about this article: I think there is clearly weird things happening with the climate (anyone who doesn’t know that is REALLY ignorant), but whether it is part of the earths natural cycle or arises from some other cause, I don’t know. However, I think to say that it is man made just because we have noticed (potentially) rising temperatures and CO2 levels over the past 50 years is a huge leap of faith. It could be caused by any number of other things.
I do think that with all the other immediately impending disasters in this world, climate change falls pretty close to the bottom of my list of worries.
Oh green grass, my feelings are so hurt…sticks and stones buddy. I think your comments are irrelevent and have no knowledge behind them IMHO, but you certainly are entitled to them…
Global Warming or Climate Change call it what ever you like.
Recalling the last drought we had back in the late 1970’s it was it was really cold and water mains actually froze in the streets.
Summers back then produced thunderstorms rolling in many afternoons with drenching downpours.
All of that has changed at least for now. This winter’s drought was with warm temps though out the season. Recent summers produced almost no rain and seem to overlap more into Fall and Spring. It’s definitely different.
Wouldn’t it be smart for all of us to stop for a few minutes and think about how we can reduce our carbon footprint each day and get healthier at the same time ?
Last summer had large amounts of rain. That’s why the fire season was so mild in the basin. The Tahoe area had a much longer drought in the early 1990’s.
I have pictures of the area in front of the Tahoe City dam with weeds and willows waist high.
I do realize this drought is very serious but don’t tell me it’s the worst since the 1970″s.
In two years people will be crying for an investigation to explain why CA didn’t shore up the levees when they had the chance.
Marlene. Tim Casey… the Petroleum Geologist who looks for well sites… with a Bachelors Degree from the University of Melbourne… you must be joking!
“Yourself? You shouldn’t be so quick to think yourself perfect. Nature, did you catch what duke just did?”
Putting words in my mouth. What a spineless tactic.
“Just because you think their world view is inaccurate, doesn’t mean it is”
When you quantify how much their world view is out of touch, it means that it is….
“” We’ve got the theory, now we just need the evidence””
That is not how it work or based on anything that has been done. You understanding of the scientific method is elementary.
Back to the subject… post links to some research.
Sore loser. You obviously think too highly of yourself to listen to people who know more than you.
