THIS IS AN ARCHIVE OF LAKE TAHOE NEWS, WHICH WAS OPERATIONAL FROM 2009-2018. IT IS FREELY AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH. THE WEBSITE IS NO LONGER UPDATED WITH NEW ARTICLES.
Great insights for some of us that were “there’, but went out into the world before knowing some of the other ‘happenings’ – such as the infamous Terry Trupp incidents
Good to see Brad Murphy noticed as 1st Mayor – it is my contention that it must take a huge amount of work to create a City from scratch – (I had experience creating a Police Department from scratch for a City of 105,000 a few years later, so can relate). . .
Mr. Murphy’s first office was in a tiny corner of the quonset hut that was the theater then, by Park Avenue). . . the second, much bigger, office, was in the corner of the L-shaped Buchanan building across from Denny’s (then the Al Tahoe post office was on that parcel). . .but he sold his practice under pressure of workload & as cancer took hold.
The Buchanan’s (Rudy & Jeannie) were respectively, the Judge here; Jeannie was his wife and partner. . .
Brad Murphy succumbed to that cancer a few years later (the stress of a new city ?), after my mother became the 1st Controller of Barton Hospital when he sold his practice.
I was two weeks shy of my 21st birthday when South Lake Tahoe was founded, and my mother kept several pristine editions of the Tahoe Daily Tribune – November 10th, 1965 – with its’ huge, bold font announcing: “A CITY IS BORN”, along with the pictures of the first 5 City Council winners. . . that was just two days after her birthday, which she considered her “gift”. . .
Thanks, Kae & Brandi. . .
