The standoff between state officials and the University of California over its finances and admissions policy grew tense Tuesday as the university threatened to limit enrollment of California students next year unless it receives more money from the state.

UC President Janet Napolitano told an Assembly budget subcommittee that the university will cap in-state enrollment at current levels while continuing to increase the number of nonresident students, pending the outcome of budget negotiations with Gov. Jerry Brown.

“We will not not be admitting students that we don’t know that we actually have funding for,” Napolitano said.

Democratic Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins slammed the plan, expressing frustration over “UC’s latest attempt to use students as bargaining chips.”

Since it’s a State school, can’t the Assembly control whether there is any Out of State enrollment at all???

Get rid of Janet….. send her to the boondocks to start her own university. I don’t want anyone like her handling CALIFORNIA assets or programs that were instituted for California residents! The University of California is for the people of California, and the State Assembly & Senate needs to reaffirm this by giving Janet strict parametrs for operating OUR University system. Grrrrr

    Wait a Minute !
We can take that overflow of students here at LTCC now that we have the $55 million dollar bond that makes our college a world destination university !
We need to get busy building employee housing everywhere to accommodate this !

Amazing to me that our State schools of higher learning have become only about the $$$.
One would think that true academia would have a more altruistic approach to bettering the education of its future. Why so much money goes into the administration is an abomination. What’s going to happen to the economy when the Student Loan bubble burst?
Let our State children have first choice in their future. Streamline the Admin. Dept, put those monies toward the actual education process and increase out of State penalties to astronomical highs. If the one percenters just HAVE to have a degree from CAL, let them help pay for OUR kids.
