Trout season about to open in California

image_pdfimage_print

The general trout opener in many counties throughout California begins April 25 one hour before sunrise.

Because of the popularity of this annual event with the angling public, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is making every effort to stock trout in all accessible waters approved for planting prior to the season opener. Lingering winter conditions and this year’s unprecedented drought could play a major role in determining how many rivers, creeks, lakes and reservoirs can be stocked before April 25.

Most lakes, rivers and streams have a limit of five trout per day and 10 in possession. However, regulations differ on season opening and closing dates, bag limits, minimum and maximum size limits, and gear restrictions.

Anglers are advised to check specific area regulations and opening dates in the 2015-16 California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulation booklet online.

Anyone16 and older must possess a valid California fishing license to fish within state lines. Freshwater fishing licenses may be purchased online.

Opening day for fishing at Bridgeport Resevoir and Twin Lakes. What a blast!!! Still got the pictures of some nice fish. Caught while trolling in the Valco aluminium boat or fishing from the shore sittin’ in a lounge chair.
Oh what a time we had! Lots of big fish, campin’ out along the shore and of course a little bit of suds consummed by those campin’ out. Drinkin’ beer makes the fish look bigger! Honest!
Fish on!!!! Grab the net! OLS

OLS – Thanks for sharing your many memories. I’m not a fisher-woman, but I sure love to eat trout – even for breakfast! So, were your fish “beer-battered” or not? Again, thanks for sharing your great memories – makes my early morning wake-up put a smile on the day!

Irish Wahini, The fish I caught back then were beer- battered… once they landed in my belly. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with a handful of tortilla chips and I was good to go!
I miss going to opening day down there but it got so as there were more fishermen than there were fish!
Here’s something my Mom used to tell me, “fishy fishy in the brook, Bobby caught him on a hook, Mommy cooked him in a pan and Bobby ate him like a little man”.
Just thought I would share that, corny as it is.
A few thoughts on fishing in the Sierras. OLS

Been fishing for trout out at Blue Lakes for over 30 years. This year the road should be open for the opener. Garlic, butter and lemon wrapped in foil and on the campfire for 3 minutes a side. Doesn’t get any better.

For breakfast, lunch or dinner. Excellent! Sometimes I add a fresh green onion or chives.

Funny as a kid and young man I could always remember fishing the opener standing on a four foot deep snowdrift, sometimes waiting for a giant sheet of ice to move by so we could cast in the sometimes frozen over lakes. Haven’t seen that for 15 years, could the world please tilt back the other way a few degrees??? Kind of missing some seasons!
