Fatal crash near Kyburz

A Bay Area man died Thursday in a head-on collision on Highway 50 near Kyburz.

David Calderon, 78, of Milpitas was pronounced dead at the scene.

Calderon was headed east May 21 at about 2:25pm when a vehicle driven by Gary Fitzgerald crossed the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic, according to California Highway Patrol officers. Fitzgerald, 73, of Grass Valley sustained serious injuries.

The accident is under investigation.

    So many drivers drift over the double line in our mountains…. We really need to be cautious and stay away from that double yellow line!

    My spouse was stuck in the backup that occurred after this crash–lengthy. We commented on how sad it is that one person is dead and the other seriously injured- probably someone’s grandparents.

    Investigation will show whether alcohol or cell phone use was a factor. Complete attention to the road can be difficult sometimes but so necessary.
