Local police to get less military-style assault gear

By David Nakamura, Washington Post

The Obama administration announced Monday it will ban federal transfers of certain types of military-style gear to local police departments, as the president seeks to respond to a spate of incidents that has frayed trust in communities across the country.

The banned items are tracked armored vehicles, bayonets, grenade launchers, ammunition of .50-caliber or higher and some types of camouflage uniforms, according to a report released by a White House working group that made the recommendations. Other equipment, including tactical vehicles, explosives and riot equipment, will be transferred only if local police provide additional certification and assurances that the gear will be used responsibly, according to the report.

Community members “have voiced concerns about what has been described as the ‘militarization’ of law enforcement due to the types of equipment” that is deployed, the report stated.

The ban on items will take effect immediately, officials said, while the restrictions on other gear will be phased in so that local law enforcement agencies can be briefed about the new requirements.

I guess our MRAP can stay ’cause it’s got wheels, not tracks. . .

This move by Obama really makes me sick, I guess to him the police don’t matter anymore.

The sole reason this gear is in our police departments right now was the fact that it was cheaper to give it away than it would have been to conventionally recycle everything. It has nothing to do with safety, and we’ve all seen recently how easy it is to call in people properly trained in their use when necessary.

Full Time, please explain how and why this makes you sick. Do you really think he is disrespecting police and police departments across the nation because he thinks maybe they don’t really need tanks and grenade launchers? Haven’t the PDs done fairly well without those two items?

OR, are you making a knee-jerk reaction to a story you really don’t comprehend?

    This is long overdue.

I have a few friends on the force. I won’t name any names or departments, but from what I can tell, the community focused PD’s have better crime rates. Their officers are encouraged to get involved, to engage people in a friendly manner. I grew up in one of these areas. Other departments take a, “use force first ask questions later” approach. Those departments have a tense relationship with the public.

I never thought that policing approaches could vary so greatly from department to department.

I think this is a good move by Obama.

The liar named Hussein and his minions led by Sharp-Tongue and the rest of the frauds, who appear to want racial tension and race wars aided by the rioters and criminals seem to want local police disarmed anyway they can. This surplus gear was available free for police and it included many useful items and saved taxpayers the cost. To take it away increases danger to our local law enforcement as this protected them from things like explosives, armed rioters with Molotov cocktails, and heavily armed radicals that are shooting at police at every riot. This is one of many reasons why you vote all liberals out at every election.

Justice, you obviously have no clue to the reality of this story. PDs still will be able to get surplus equipment from the military. To infer Obama is “taking away” anything is a complete fallacy.

The right wing fringe not so long ago were making statements that the military surplus going to PDs was Obama’s attempt at arming the police to take away citizens guns. Now they make a 180 degree spin and say he is disarming PDs to create a race war.

Folks like Justice and a few others on this forum love to make comments based on no fact whatsoever. They disrespect our president on a regular basis but cry foul when they are disrespected for false claims.

And yet with all the lies they spew they get away with it because the president they hate has not ever made one move to take away their first amendment rights, contrary to their outlandish rhetoric.

Molotov cocktails? Heavily armed radicals?(I’m thinking Bundyville). ‘Psych-med rationing’ appears to have come a little early this month for inJustice…

What a shame. The use of U-2 spy planes, satellites and helicopter raids buy cops with automatic weapons did such a great job during the war on pot.

Great. Get rid of the “scary looking” stuff, just to make people feel good, while you continue militarizing the police so the Globalists can take over America. What an evil piece of trash. Time to wake up to what’s really going on.

People who have no idea what they are talking about who have never done anything except sit back and let others do it for them keep talking and thinking they know something, which they don’t. None, I bet, have ever had any experience in either being deployed to protect the country through the military service or in law enforcement facing off in civilian incidents and their ignorance is a danger to public safety and local law enforcement as much as anything else.
