Pay raises approved for Brown, Calif. legislators
By Patrick McGreevy, Los Angeles Times
SACRAMENTO — A state panel appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown voted Monday to give the governor, state legislators and many other officials a 3% pay raise, saying it would make their salaries more competitive with leaders elsewhere.
The increases will take effect Dec. 7.
Thomas Dalzell, chairman of the state Citizens Compensation Commission, said the 2.5 percent raises taking effect July 1 for many rank-and-file state workers also were a basis for the new salaries.
Brown’s pay will go from $177,466 a year to $182,789; the base salary for lawmakers will go from $97,196 to $100,111. Leadership posts in the Legislature pay up to 15 percent more.
Of course!
How nice to simply be able to vote yourself a raise. They don’t even need to live on those incomes, for the most part. When they’re working they also get per diem, government issued cars and gasoline, medical insurance for themselves and their families. . . pretty nice racket.
And by the time the next election rolls around, the people will have forgotten about it.
The raises (or reductions) are determined by the Citizens Compensation Commission. The affected elected officials do not vote on their own pay.
Who chooses the Citizens Compensation Commission?
The Governor appoints the members. You can find the website at http://www.calhr.ca.gov/cccc. You, or any other citizen, can apply for appointment.
Nevada resident here. I have no say in it. ;-)
Well, how convenient. How in the world could these mopes accept a raise by a self appointed panel?! REALLY Moonbutt? In a time where you are demanding everyone cut back water usage and you are demanding a train to nowhere at the taxpayers expense?? True colors you senile goat.
Just like when the City of South Lake Tahoe hired a consultant to determine the pay of its top mgrs. And voila’, the consultant determined that those that hired him needed a 30% raise. (And the public was never allowed to see or review this report.)
This, the year right after the City said it was broke and conned people into passing a tax increase.
State, City, whatever govt. entity, play the same games. And why not? They always get away with it!
They appoint and they expect and they get. The taxpayers pay and any who are smart are moving away and the rest will pay and pay until it all collapses someday.
And when the voters approved the $55M bond for the college, they gave themselves a raise too. Isn’t it amazing?
So next, the county next door will say, LOOK! The county next door got raises! They’re making more money, so WE need to make more money too!
And ’round and ’round it goes. And you keep voting them back in.
Brown is now making almost as much as The City of So Lake Tahoe’s City Manager, but he is only the Governor of California.
Ever consider the idea that they’re ALL making way too much?
Dogula, LTCC (compared to other Junior College) underpays their staff significantly. To attract good people, you need to pay competitive wages.
Also, their raises had nothing to do with the bond measure. That’s a fact. Stop spreading false information.
If your getting into politics for the money, then something is wrong.
