Guns in the U.S.: For every criminal killed in self-defense, 34 innocent people die

By Christopher Ingraham, Washington Post

“The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.”says Wayne LaPierre, the vice president of the National Rifle Association.

That’s become the kernel of the NRA’s response to recent mass shooting tragedies — if only more people carried guns for protection, the thinking goes, then they would be less likely to be victimized by gun-wielding criminals.

“The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun,” LaPierre said

The challenge to that argument is that, data show, guns are rarely used in self-defense — especially relative to the rate at which they’re used in criminal homicides or suicides.

Skewed statistic… How many incidents are foiled by being armed, brandishing a firearm, saying you are armed or the criminal just knowing you are. Just look at how many times a day a police officer draws a weapon in a day and situations are neutralized with no shots fired. It is the same on a lesser scale with a legally armed citizen. I do agree whole heartedly that some folks have no business exercising their right to have a firearm or power tools for that matter!

To paraphrase (and plagiarize) a line from Catch 22, “If all these dangerous people have guns, then I’d be a damn fool not to have one too, wouldn’t I?”

What it really shows is the problem is criminal’s with guns using them in crimes. This is the problem that needs attention with strict sentencing laws. It has nothing to do with law abiding citizens. It is all about felons with guns. The revolving doors that see criminals let out with mile long rap sheets over and over again until they really do something bad is THE biggest problem with criminals and firearms.

Just an FYI: gun deaths exceeded motor vehicle deaths in 14 states and the District of Columbia in 2011.

A perfect example of a gun being used to stop violence is Mark Vaughn of Vaughn Foods in Moore OK. That was the case where the nut beheaded 1 woman but Vaughn got his gun & killed the criminal as he was trying to behead another woman. She survived. Personally, I’m alive because my ex-husband who was medically determined to be homicidal & suicidal knew I owned firearms & had a concealed carry permit. He didn’t give a rat’s behind about a restraining order. Thankfully the psychiatrist call me to warn me. Let’s face it, criminals are criminals because they don’t obey the law. The inanimate implements they use really aren’t relevant.

Personally, I am anti-gun. Yet by the same token, I believe that no one should on a gun OR everybody who wants to should. It is too late for a middle ground. With the exception of a few notorious towns, the wild west really was not as wild as Hollywood has made it out to be. It only stands to reason that the bad guys knew that everyone on the street had a gun. The odds were that if they used theirs, some one else would use theirs as well. You stood a good chance yourself of getting your poop blown against the wall. I see it as instant vigilante justice. Take them all away or give everyone free access. It won’t take long for the dust to settle.

The 2nd amendment isn’t about protecting yourself from a criminal. The 2nd amendment is about protecting yourself from the government.

The Constitution and Bill of Rights is the document protecting the people from a tyrannical group of corrupt politicians posing as King’s and one as Queen attempting to seize power and create riots and wars among our citizens while debasing the very founding of the country. This isn’t fiction these days, it is reality. Every crises they use and create is their means aided by leftist media. They use whatever emotional issue and false fact they can manufacture like this article. The problem is largely criminals being released over and over again to get guns and use them in crimes. Until this is addressed, gun violence will increase.

I believe it was early in 2000, my Wife got a man fired for abusing a mentally ill woman. This led to stalking and death threats. The man and his family were all violent gangbangers from Salinas.
They came to our house threatening to kill Myself, my Wife, our two small kids, and our unborn child.

What made the difference was that I had an AR15 and 30 rd magazines.

The cowards changed their minds. 5 lives saved with no tabulation of this fact. Our situation and those like it go unreported everyday. The numbers used in this article are not realistic.

The Lake Tahoe New parrots these worthless articles to further an anti gun agenda just like the bigger state run media. Too bad.

Americans just like guns. The idea of someone coming for you, self protection, blah blah blah is total nonsense. Americans just LIKE guns, that’s about it, it’s really the best and only argument you have. No amount of statistics or studies or facts will change any of it. America is a wildly violent place relative to other advanced countries as a result. Nothing has to make sense to the rabid gun owner, other than they just want their guns. I own guns , legal, registered, a lot like my car. Nobody is taking your guns away, no one is coming for you and your family , the likelihood of you being a hero in Wal Mart is virtually non existent. Yet we must endure these fantasies in this great country in order that paranoid gun kooks get their way and common sense legislation is DOA.

I offer up the following link that , besides being hilarious, really hits the nail on the head. Explicit language.

  20. rock4tahoe says - Posted: June 26, 2015

We are talking about Weapons NOT automobiles or cell phones or spoons or toothpicks; Weapons.

    The Second Amendment Reads…

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

“Arms” means weapons; NOT modes of transportation.

“Regulated” means to control or direct according to rule, principle, or law.

  21. reloman says - Posted: June 26, 2015

But rock but it says a well regulated Militia, which means to me that the militia is regulated. It then says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. It does not say the right of the Militia to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
The intention of the founding fathers was that everyone should have a right to have weapons. After all back then there were indian wars still and little if any police force and people had to protect themselves rather than rely on others.

  22. Dogula says - Posted: June 27, 2015

    “. . . shall not be infringed.”

  23. rock4tahoe says - Posted: June 27, 2015

    Relo, It is one sentence.

In the 1770’s a good Soldier could perhaps fire 2 rounds per minute; today we measure rounds released per second.

Also, where do you draw the line on a “weapon.” The most powerful “weapons” known to mankind at this point are Nuclear (~1.5 Megatons), Chemical (Sarin or VX) and Biological (Anthrax or Plague.)

  24. mountaindude says - Posted: June 29, 2015

It is flawed information. In my situation and many others, the guns did not have to be fired or kill the bad guy to save lives. The mere presence of my AR15 made seasoned gangbangers go home to Mommy.

    5 lives saved.

  25. mountaindude says - Posted: June 29, 2015

“Regulated” means trained. Besides the intention of the 2nd Amendment and it’s association to the individual and guns in common use were established in Miller v. US 1937, and Heller v. DC in 2008.

  26. TeaTotal says - Posted: June 30, 2015

mountaindude- “regulated” means regulated- and what happens when the ‘gangbangers’ get 2 or 3 AR-15s of their own, what do you do then?-get a rocket launcher to ‘protect your family’ or just shoot it out and hope for the best
