Internet, cable providers hated more than airlines

By Brian Fung, Washington Post

Hitting a seven-year low, Internet providers and pay-TV companies were literally just ranked as the least popular industries in America.

Those businesses come tied in last place in the latest update to the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, which ranks 43 industries on a 0-to-100 scale. The country’s most hated industries, each with a score of 63, fall behind the U.S. Postal Service (69), wireless carriers (70) and even airlines (71).

That’s a drop from even two years ago, when subscription television scored a 68 and Internet providers got a 65. (Then, as now, they were still the least popular industries on the index.)

Corrupt former government monopolies with no real competition at SLT.

Anyone who has ever dealt with Charter here in town would tell you that this is the least surprising story ever. And Yes Perry, the only way they stay in business is because they have no competition.

We dropped cable TV with its high rates and regular unwarranted rate increases, and ridiculous set top boxes, a couple years ago and simply switched to free HD antenna TV. Best move ever.

You don’t sit down before your airlines every night

Steve- Excuse my ignorance but what is HD antenna TV? Do you mean something like Roku? I just called AT&T to quit my service and can’t believe what they are doing to keep my business. The credits and freebies were flying.

I hate my cable bill more than any other bill I have. I would get rid of it but the rest of my family insists we keep it

We only have 55,000 full time people in Tahoe so we don’t get a lot of choices and the ones we get are expensive no matter satellite or cable. The over the computer Amazon Prime, Roku, etc. services are ok if you don’t want to watch current season shows.

There has been a push to get us upgraded services, fiber, etc. for less but there just isn’t enough people to make it happen quickly. The million plus seasonal tourist population doesn’t help the local residential population. The hotels, casinos that have a big base just pay the rates

I understand that internet service is not free and comes at a price, because it is a service. However, close to $60 a month just to have cable modem service access is ridiculous and outrageous. I would drop it in a hot second, but it is for me a necessary evil, and that is what Charter are banking on, exactly that.

I gave up cable TV more than a year ago. I use the free HULU internet service.

It’s a pain to get the free service. They try and direct you to the free trial. After I got used to it I love it.

Lake Tahoe TV, KCRA and KTVU have live stream news. When I want sports I go to a bar.

Isee… HD antenna TV is simply a rooftop antenna that is capable of receiving HD content. Of course you need a TV that can receive the digital signal but the quality is great for free. No cable channels but I was surprised how much is available for free. My problem is trees. Doesn’t work for a lot of people here in Tahoe. I can’t even get a signal with a dish so Charter is my only option. Opposite of you, I called Charter about a year ago after AT&T was making a push here in Tahoe. Even though AT&T couldn’t get to my neighborhood I told Charter I wanted to switch and they did a lot to keep me as a customer. A lot of freebies including faster internet and more channels for a lowered monthly rate just to keep me.

Thanks Seamoore- That’s not for me ’cause I can’t “see the forest for the trees” here. (ha-ha)
My son taught me to always call the cancellation dept. as they have power to fix, refund and change rates if that’s what it takes to keep you. Everyone -go for it, the worst that can happen is your bill stays the same.

Once the internet provider conglomerates eventually destroy net neutrality-with enough conservative votes-your only choice will be-bend over
gubmint regulation is the only thing preventing this-the dumbing down is almost complete

We use a Roku, and it’s great, but I didn’t know you could stream local channels on it either. There IS getting to be more and more stuff available, but I’d love to know how to get local news and such.
