Man killed by SLT officer didn’t have weapon

A man with a history of drug arrests was the victim of Monday’s shooting in South Lake Tahoe.

A single bullet fired by a South Lake Tahoe police officer in the early morning hours of June 15 killed Kris Jackson, 22, of Sacramento. Jackson was trying to flee out of a window at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn when fired upon. Jackson died at Barton Memorial Hospital a few hours after being shot.
“The involved officer’s statement explains he perceived a deadly threat from Kris Jackson. After interviews and a search of the crime scene, no firearm or other weapon was located,” the police department said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.
This is the time line of events as released by the department from dispatch records:
- 2:40:21am — Call into dispatch received and the caller reports a female crying and screaming.
- 2:41:27am — Two officers were dispatched.
- 2:47:28am — Officers arrive on scene.
- 2:49:39am — The involved officer reports on the radio that someone is going out the back window.
- 2:49:57am — The involved officer reports the shooting to dispatch.
- 2:50:13am — An ambulance is requested.
- 2:56:46am — The ambulance arrived on scene.
The officer’s name still has not been released.This is the first officer involved shooting in the city in more than 10 years.
Jackson was on criminal probation. He goes by Jaez BenSlidin on Facebook.
On June 1, Jackson was arrested by South Lake Tahoe police officers for allegedly possessing several baggies of cocaine, scales and packaging materials. On May 21 he had been arrested by local officers on a Sacramento failure to appear warrant related to a drug possession charge.
Officers were called the hotel on Highway 50 because of screams and a woman crying. The woman was not the victim of physical abuse, according to authorities.

I did not know Kris and I definitely am opposed to illegal activities.
Whether we agree with Kris’ facebook, instagram, lifestyle, or previous charges/allegations or not; the fact remains (as presented in this article)that Kris was shot and killed for climbing out of a window.
Public officials are here to serve the community in a defined manner, and with the current facts, the officer violated this.
It does not help the community to have officials that are willing to take the law into their own hands.
Whatever Kris’ current lifestyle may have been, he was a young man living in the United States of America, where we have a have a due process, and a belief in rehabilitation and redemption.
We have all been violated by this officers actions. (Given the current facts of course.)
It’s sad that this 22-year old elected to take such a self-destructive course in his short life. After viewing the images he posted of himself and the poor choices he made this outcome doesn’t seem to be an altogether unexpected conclusion.

I have know idea who this person was but he certainly deserves better then your hatefulness.
Let the investigation speak for itself, the officer had what must be an obvious cause to use deadly force and he did. What information did the officer have is the question. Was he told the guy was armed? Many times these type of felons take actions like reaching into their clothes or pointing their cell phones that reflect like metal and generally acting like they are armed. Until the facts are out, everything else is imagination. Wait until the report is released by the DA for the truth of the matter.
Don’t judge the officer in the court of public opinion. The officer felt a threat and fired. All of our officer’s go through extensive training. In all cases including the nationally televised cases, if the perpetrator’s had complied with police none would be dead. All my best to those involved, especially the Police Officer that was forced to pull the trigger!

There are those lately across the country who have had very bad outcomes when they make choices to RESIST arrest as in this case. Add this guy was trying be the dope “Gangsta” from Sac who was on felony probation already and his rap sheet was getting longer and he was using Tahoe as a base for felony crimes. His outcome was going to be prison or a sudden death. People are wildly guessing here without facts and not knowing what the officer was told or what he saw which is very likely he was told that the guy was armed and would resist violently. The report from the DA will be the most important as to what happened.

It’s not “comply or die”, it’s respect law enforcement as they go out every day and put their lives on the line. Comply with their demands and you will likely be treated with the same respect. If you don’t the officer has to protect himself, the safety of fellow officers and the public. I have seen and read about a great many law enforcement people that were lax in their approach and ended up the victim. Every time someone is pulled over, a cop responds to a call or is thrust into harms way the outcome can be death.

I know this will shock many but I only have a few of short statements to make:
1) wait for the impartial shooting investigation to be completed.
2)!for some, educate yourself on what a perceived threat is.
3) realize these things go down within a nano second of time based on a series of events. Never is it cut and dried.
4) even though the suspect has a long criminal history and his Face Book page obviously professed his gang, gun, criminal attitude, anti society, and drug ties, this did not come into play of the officer’s mindset when the officer fired. Yet I will make the assumption it certainly came into play for the suspect.
5) although not a reason in and of itself, often running and resisting arrest/contact w law enforcement can set up a chain of events resulting in a deadly shooting.
Word is the officer just recently completed his training. I support the police and hope it was a justified shooting. Now if this country would just decriminalize drugs, things like this might not happen as frequently. Just put a big camp next to burning man in the blackrock desert for a drug tribe to live. Just ship in food water and the occasional body bag. Much cheaper than the failed war on drugs.

Retired cop is 100% correct in this case. It boils down to a series of actions the dead guy took to end up where he is. As to what happened at the window, it isn’t being reported yet. Did the officer suspect a fleeing rapist or other violent crime had just occurred and he reacted to protect the safety of others? Did he see what he believed to be a weapon? Some object the guy was holding like a cell with all his dope clients on it? Something had to have triggered the response. The reality is in life you can only make so many dangerous choices before one of them turns out bad.

If the Instagram photo of Jackson in the fifth post of this thread was available to police before they found him, then the BOLO would list him as “armed and dangerous.”
A&D, trying to escape out a window away from an officer who has no doubt ordered him to stop, toward the backup officer, that officer would have been a fool (and possibly a dead one) to not shoot.
Over a 30 year period I lost 5 law enforcement friends; every one of them died with their side arms still holstered (except for Jim R. whose gun was pulled out by the murderer). If any one of them had been made aware of a photo of their assailant showing him holding a handgun, and acted on that knowledge, they’d be alive today – and the wannabe bad dude would be sharing the darkness with this loser Jackson.
Don’t know the name of the SLTD officer, but I hope he continues to be safe and has a long and successful career in law enforcement. I do know he’s picked a quality agency to work for.

On June 1, 2015, Kris Jackson, 22, and another man, Kevon Lomack, 26, were arrested on a variety of drug charges. Two weeks later, on June 15th, Mr. Jackson was shot and killed during an interaction with a South Lake Tahoe Police officer. Less than a week later, on Sunday, June 21, Mr. Jackson’s partner in the prior arrest, Mr. Lomack and a 29 year old female, were again arrested on more drug charges.
Some people just refuse to learn from their own or other’s mistakes.
I will not make excuses for either of these two guys, but they would not be up here selling their drugs if there were no customers. And that includes the “harmless” gateway drugs. This is just my opinion, thank you for listening.

So sorry to hear that an Iowa Dad called the police to tell them his son had his truck, without permission. (and it wasn’t stolen and he had no gun). The Dad wanted the police to let the kid know it wasn’t OK to take the truck for a pack of smokes. They pull the kid over, tell him to shut the truck off and then shoot him 6 times, killing him. How we doing in the good ol’ USA these days? This is an epidemic. Maybe L.E. has had it and are trying to tell people “do not call the police, EVER”. They certainly have my attention.
