Camp Rich campground, bike path work to begin

Work begins this week on the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit’s plans to improve the Camp Richardson area.

The first phase of the Campground and Vehicle Circulation Best Management Practices Retrofit is designed to meet current standards for water quality protection and universal accessibility. About 250 trees in the campground on the north side of Highway 89 will be removed.

Campsites and roads will be moved from sensitive stream environment zone areas. A portion of the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path (locally known as the Camp Rich bike path) will be moved from the highway shoulder. A new campground entrance will also be created.

The first phase of the project is expected to be complete by October.  Phase two on the south side of Highway 89 is anticipated to begin in September 2015 and be finished by June 2016.

Oh no they’re going to murder 250 trees! Think about all the bugs and bunny’s.

Before you know it the sun could shine through in that area.

On the flip side those trees are both sound and visual barriers to the highway? Isnt it already unpleasant enough to camp in view of the highway? Same for the bike path, which by the way is not on the road shoulder there to begin with? so this makes no sense:
“A portion of the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path (locally known as the Camp Rich bike path) will be moved from the highway shoulder. A new campground entrance will also be created”

a lot of what has been done in that area and planned for that area (such as the widened highway shoulders) smells of make work and overkill.

It would help bike trail traffic if the Forest Service would post “rules of the road” reminders on the paths: bikes ride to the right, pedestrians walk to the left (facing traffic). Most visitors have never walked anywhere but a sidewalk – many have never walked anywhere. An explanation of what to do when you’re walking (or running) and hear “to your right” from behind would probably be too complex for most.

USFS continues its logging operation. This time in the Camp Richardson area and heading towards Baldwin Beach.
Get ready Emerald Bay and west shore. The chainsaws and bulldozers are headed your way! Old Long Skiis

Some huge old trees between Valhalla and Kiva have been cut down. Lying on the ground, the logs came up to my neck so at lease 5 feet in diameter. They didn’t look punky or sick–just the FS doing what they do best.

Hiker chick, that tree at the entrance to kiva was blown down by the wind. Can’t blame forestry service for that one….
