I hate to be the Devils advocate but he is not a hero. He created a situation that was not there like he thought, and paid the ultimate price for his choice. There was no reason to leave his paddle board or kayak. He did not think about the situation or his skills in the water which unfortunately we’re very poor. Rule number one in rescue, don’t become a victim. I’m sorry for the families loss, but it should have been easily avoided.

Ds, I’m guessing he didn’t have your phone number to call so he could be filled in on the rules of water rescue.

From the story’s description, he attempted to help rescue his sister and drowned trying to assist a friend, despite his lack of expertise. That’s an heroic action in my book.

I’ve heard reports they were drinking. Not sure if that’s true but alcohol and the lake can be a very dangerous combination. RIP to the sheriff

He died trying to save someone. It was a split second decision, maybe could’ve handled it different maybe not the way a water rescue team would have handled it. He is a hero though for his action, someone willing speak negative of a man willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for someone else is a bit unfiltered.

Let’s not forget he is a cop. He is trained to understand a situation and act accordingly.

The reports coming out saying they were about 100 feet away and he jumped off his paddle board and within 20 feet of leaving it he was drowning. Why did he not paddle up to the person? Was this really the first time he realized he is a poor swimmer?

Someone that creates a situation that was not there and died because of there choice is not a hero..they can’t be classified in the same catagory as someone who truly risks their lives for others.
