EDC looking into broadband for the area
As part of an effort to begin a countywide strategic planning initiative to formulate a long term sustainable broadband strategy, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors is planning a workshop to examine the state of broadband service in the county and its impacts on businesses and residents.
The workshop is Sept. 1 at 5pm at 330 Fair Lane in Placerville.
Participating in the workshop will be representatives from Valley Vision, Tahoe Prosperity Center, and the Sierra Economic Development Corporation. Key to this discussion will be an analysis to determine what Internet service is currently available and where there are gaps, to identify related community goals and ultimately, to produce a strategic roadmap of how to best close gaps in service and achieve community objectives.
Good, I do hope they bring us an alternative to Charter Cable in the county, there rates are through the roof and we are stuck with them, no AT&T is not an option.
The optimist in me says good, improved broadband will be a big step forward for the basin.
The cynic in me says now that we’re getting the alphabet soup of quasi government and government agencies involved we’ll have a $250,000 study to identify the gaps in service, a $500,000 study to develop a feasibility plan to fill the gaps, and then a $2,000,000 planning and review process to identify the preferred alternatives for expanding service.
And by the time this is all completed, the proposed technology will be obsolete. Remember TIIMS and the kiosk system for Blue Go’s on demand coordinated transit system?
Right! For the last week I’ve been trying to watch certain shows via charter. The guide says one thing then I click and it’s a completely different show. Charter sucks more and more. I would welcome any change to drop them.
Yeah the guide is all screwed up. Charter is by far the worst cable provider I’ve ever used. Where’s AT&T at?
I know I sound like a broken record, but. . . it’s GOVERNMENT that gives the cable companies their monopoly control over certain areas. Without government interference, you’d have more options. Heck, if it wasn’t for the government you could have live streaming sports and other television options through Aereo. But the Feds shot ’em down.
Thanks!
Dogula, please tell us what system of government belonging to what country you WOULD approve of.
BP dogzilla is her own government and seems to know everything there is to know about, well, everything. She just wants to blame someone else for everything. Wingnut…
Bigs, I believe a free market would be the best and fairest system.
And everybody who wants to jump in and say it doesn’t work has no idea. We haven’t had one ever in our lifetimes.
Bats, explain where I am wrong.
Instead of just “pointing fingers” and hurling personal insults.
The free market gave us rivers that caught fire, child labor, 12hr days, 6 day weeks. In the free market Ford’s pintos and GM’s ignition problems would have not been addressed.
Google oil in Nigeria and see what the free market oil companies have done to that country.
Capitalism is the best economic engine ever invented but there has to be a floor below which it cannot go. That is where regulation comes in. We can argue about the level of regulation that is appropriate but I cannot believe that anyone would advocate for unfettered free markets.
More to the point of this article. Our problems with cable companies began when they were unregulated twenty or thirty years ago.
Hahahahaha! That was no free market. It’s ALL totally government regulated and has been for generations. Your government isn’t keeping you any safer than free market consequences for ineptitude would. Less so. And before children were able to work and earn money, they STARVED. Is that better? You wouldn’t know a free market if it bit you in the. . .
Name a free market then.
Apparently these super fiber optic communication lines are beneath and or on the shoulder of major roads such as federal roads. Tahoe might be one of the least economically viable areas to put in communication lines as there are few people and the terrain is very inhospitable to lower overhead.
Ah, Prunes; you expect the rest of us to live within the parameters of YOUR imagination?
Just because it doesn’t exist now doesn’t mean it couldn’t. Nothing like the United States existed in 1776, either.
Small minds . . .
Just trying to keep up with your insults wrongula. You know, you sling them, I sling them back. Its sorta like donky pong…
I see no need to get into the meat of the argument because the rhetoric never change, or the insults. For me, im just trying to keep the playing field even…
Dog, Aereo was broadcasting other people’s copyrighted material. In your ideal society, would it be reasonable to take something that you didn’t create and sell it? Simple answers are often not real answers.
