Elementary school students who use their cards or sign up for one during September will be entered into a drawing for a Jamba Juice Party for their class and $75 for their teacher to use on classroom supplies.

Teens and adults who sign up for a card or use their existing card will be entered into a drawing for Jamba Juice gift cards.

Yeah, that’s an appropriate use of money stolen from homeowners. . .

Geeze dogzilla, ragging on the public library now? You seem to have it out for every institution. The library gets these handouts gratis, that means free. The jamba juice business gets lots of free publicity and more people going into their business means more revenue means more taxes they can give back to the community means the library budget is obtainable. I know you think that is some form of theft but you are pretty much the only troll I know of that sees that as a bad thing. Go take your kindness meds, you are in need….

I think most normal people realize what a great community asset our local library is and are thankful for the services they provide to all-ferchrissakes give the relentless shrewish hate a rest-

    Tea, exactly…

Libraries are an essential part of a thriving community. They help children develop a love of reading (and, therefore, education). They help with adult literacy programs. They provide free educational events for the community. They provide books for those who might otherwise not be able to afford them. They provide internet access (and, therefore, help to job seekers) who would otherwise have no access. As a homeowner, and member of this community I am proud to support our local library.

    I love libraries.
But do not claim that what they provide is “free”.
Property owners, whether they want to or not, are forced to pay for those services. Voters elected to extend the library tax on property owners, most of whom had no choice in the matter. Fine. People always vote to tax OTHER people, when they think they get something “free” that somebody else has to pay for. Human nature.
But giving away their money in prizes that have been taken by force rather than using the money for actual books, salaries, supplies, etc is questionable.
For the most part, libraries are obsolete. But I still like them.

Dog, YOU are obsolete. You’re just a pathetic old rambling naybob of negativity. Don’t want to pay your taxes? Then do everyone who reads this site a favor and buy an island, move to it, and be the misanthropic queen of Nowheresville.
Property owners DID have a choice in the library tax. We got to vote just like everyone else. If things didn’t go your way then boo-hoo for you.
One giant EMP and the digital world could go bye bye. Be nice to still have accumulated knowledge available then.

    too little too late IMHO

Haddi, More than half of the houses in Tahoe are second homes. Their owners do not get to vote on local issues. They vote at their primary residences. The library vote was purely local. Taxation without representation.
I still don’t understand why so many of you need to insult people just because you disagree with them. It doesn’t make you look any smarter, that’s for sure.

My guess is that the majority of second homeowners are the kind of people who would vote positively for having a public library in the community where their vacation/second home is based as it increases the property value by having a full service community. Then there are the others like dogzilla although its my guess she isnt a first or second home owner here, only someone who shows her ignorance and hateful spirit pretty much daily…

  11. Haddi T. Uptahere says - Posted: August 30, 2015

    Dog,
YOU don’t live here and neither do the folks you are speaking of. “Second Home” is double talk (generally speaking) for an income property. Business investors in these properties should plan on a portion of their income being used for local taxes. Libraries are history storage units. Don’t we wish MORE of them had been preserved since the beginning of recorded history? Please quit complaining about things that really have NO concern to you except for your over the top hatred of any governmental situation.

Dogula, just so you know there is a Friends of the Library group that financially supports these programs and that money is donated or raised by fundraisers and not taken from taxes.

Wow, one grumpy person has turned a post about our wonderful local library into a string of negativity. I have always believed that you can’t change negative people, but you can change how you react to them. So please, ignore the posts made just to egg everyone else on. Instead, comment on the best thing about our library.

I love the librarians, such a friendly and helpful group of women (and one man!). And did you know you can rent ebooks on your kindle? I think I’ll quit news for the night and go read a book.

Enough, you are so right. Sometimes it is hard to not respond to ignorance and hateful responses.

I think our public library is one of the greatest assets in our town and I use it monthly. All the staff are helpful and friendly, the facility is easy to access and used by so many community groups for all kinds of events. When my son was a toddler there were special programs for little kids, story time, crafts, special appearances, cultural programs, and many other opportunities. As he has grown he had the opportunity to be part of a “geography club” that taught him about other countries and cultures and he has made pen pals all over the world. They met at the public library meeting room and used library resources for their studies. Local people/groups can use the display cabinets to showcase their art or history or events. Volunteers are plentiful for many of the libraries programs, its a central meeting place for seniors, special interest groups, schools.
our public library is one of the best values for the taxes IMHO.
