Busy holiday weekend expected

AAA is projecting 35.5 million people in the U.S. will take to the roads and skies Labor Day weekend.

That calculates to $13.5 billion travelers will pour into the economy — up 2 percent over 2014. Each person taking a trip for the long weekend is expected to spend an average of $380 on goods and services, according to a survey and analysis released by the U.S. Travel Association.

The survey, conducted for U.S. Travel by the firm TNS, found that even among those who plan to travel this weekend, 8.7 percent will stay fewer days and 9.1 percent will travel shorter distances due to concerns over road congestion and flying headaches. Factoring in those shortened trips, the total Labor Day economic cost of hassles due to infrastructure rises to $1.7 billion.

Trip spending by auto travelers is expected to average $270, according to U.S. Travel’s survey. With AAA projecting 30.4 million travelers by car, that totals out to $8.2 billion — an increase of 0.5 percent over 2014. The fact that the spending figure will increase at all is significant, say U.S. Travel Association researchers, given that gasoline is considerably cheaper than a year ago.

Expected trip spending by air travelers is significantly higher at $1,090 on average, for a total weekend spending figure of $2.9 billion — a year-over-year increase of 4.9 percent — based on AAA’s projection of 2.6 million air travelers.

The remaining $2.4 billion in predicted Labor Day spending will come from the 2.5 million Americans expected to travel by “other means.”

OLS you are right it’s nice to get a boost right before the shoulder season. We should all be nice to the tourist so they come back. Let them know about the fall colors and decent weather so maybe they will visit us this fall. Not much goes on until the ski season starts and we can use all the tourist that we can get. Bring on the snow!

I love how some of you idiots think that tourists equals more money for you. “It helps the economy here a derp derp!”

Who’s economy? The people who own the casinos? Do you think the janitors get more money because it’s a busy weekend? They don’t. Do you think the Starbucks employees or raleys people get “an economy boost”.

No. They simply have to deal with more idiots from out of town acting like the rules don’t apply to them.

If anything it causes most locals to not leave their house until these douches leave. Thus not boosting your “economy”.

I know the SLT gov. Likes to tell you tourism will make a difference in your life eg. It will “boost the economy”

If you’re dumb enough to actually believe that I have some beachfront property in Kansas to sell you.

Of course OLS is always positive. Ignorance is bliss.

Lisa: this town would be fine without tourism. Me may lose a few fluorescent t shirt shops and a few homeless roaches but most of us would be just fine. If you weren’t a waitress at dotties you wouldn’t have to depend on these morons either.

Lets be as nice as we can to our incoming guests this holiday. Be welcoming , not complaning about our out of town visitors.
This is our little resort town and we NEED these folks coming to Tahoe and coming back for another stay spreading the word to friends and neighbors what a good time they had at Lake Tahoe!
Word of mouth is a good way to build local business that helps everyone that lives here. Take Care, OLS

Liberule, you have ABSOLUTELY no idea of what you speak. I remember having a conversation with a like minded individual to you many years ago. He was dissing on tourist and I told him the vast majority of locals rely on tourism based income directly of indirectly. He told me I was wrong in his case because he worked for a painting contractor. I then asked him what was the last job he did painting. His reply was a local motel. I looked at him in amazement at his naivete and told him I rest my case!

Even as a “hydrologist” your income is indirectly effected by tourism if you work for ANY entity in the basin. But I wouldn’t expect a young punk as yourself to understand how the world really works!

    are they coming here?

  18. Old Long Skiis says - Posted: September 3, 2015

I do not understand how some people hate our guests so much. I guess it’s just a choice of how you view our guests.
Wait till your hours at work are cut back, reduced and hourly wages are cut down. You’ll welcome our visitors then. Be good and be welcoming to our out of town folks.
    Take care, OLS
