Letter: Questioning Nevada’s bear policy

Publisher’s note: This letter was sent to Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and is printed with permission.

To Gov. Sandoval,

If education and workforce development are your priorities, would you start by addressing the Keep Our Bears Wild program and the executive proclamation leading to Bear Logic month that are not being enforced by NDOW? Where is the education of the public to reduce the bear welcoming mat? Why are bears being trapped and killed under false pretenses? Why doesn’t your organization educate homeowners on bear aversion tactics? Why aren’t bear proof boxes mandatory? Why aren’t businesses fined for overflowing garbage bins? Why are bears euthanized when a homeowner leaves a door open inviting intruders? Why don’t bear lives matter more? Why doesn’t NDOW refuse to trap when it’s the homeowner’s fault like California? Where is NDOW’s accountability? Who do they answer to?

They sure seem to be running amuck. Educate the public. Educate NDOW.

There is no reason we cannot coexist with bears when we are living in their territory. Stop sacrificing the bears and start educating the public and holding NDOW accountable.

Sincerely,

Dianne Gross, El Dorado Hills

Every article I have ever read about bears in Nevada NDoW has reminded and encouraged people that they need to manage trash and remove attractants.

Why aren’t bear proof boxes mandatory? Why aren’t businesses fined for overflowing garbage bins?
Its the Nevada Department of WILDLIFE. Not the Nevada department of trash management.

Why are bears euthanized when a homeowner leaves a door open inviting intruders?
Have you ever seen what a bear will do to a shut door if it wants in your house?

Why don’t bear lives matter more?
They handle bears based on science, facts and NOT emotions. Do you remember when that bear was found injured next to the highway in incline? Do you remember NDoW calling in a helicopter and flying that bear to get medical attention in reno?

Why doesn’t NDOW refuse to trap when it’s the homeowner’s fault like California?
Ca. will check to make sure homeowner doesn’t have attractants and if none are found they will issue homeowner depredation permit to kill the bear. Then its up to the homeowner. The comments that Ca, doesn’t kill nuisance bears is false. You just don’t hear about it.

Well, like he says Gov Sandoval.I get thousands of Letters. He does not care to read, He is all for Hunting, And trapping, and killing,I think We all should pull in together to Have a Meeting with Bear League,Ndow, And the Gov of Nevada ,Most of all The Public,There has been a Petititon,And over 950 signatures have been out,If people say they care about lives of Bears ,Then it should be addressed in Public to voice our opinion to save the Bears,Its time to join together and fix the problem for the Bears,To many being killed ,and killing the bears is not the solution.Lets get answers from the people that are associated with the traps and hunting and killing,Lets pull together dont you think it is about time?
