Barton-SLT agree to land coverage deal

South Lake Tahoe is selling coverage to Barton Health for the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence.

The facility will be a two-story health and sports performance center just behind Barton Memorial Hospital near the emergency room, along with a three-story free standing garage. It is expected to open in 2017.

The city has nearly 200,000-square-feet of banked coverage from the Upper Truckee River project. Because this is from sensitive land the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency sees it as more valuable so Barton actually needs to buy less coverage.

The health care agency is spending $500,000 for 80,332 square feet of coverage from the city.

Barton was given a $10 million donation by Lisa Maloff to build the center in her late husband’s name.

The city per FAA regulations must spend the half million at the airport. This could be on renovations at the airport lobby, on a proposed events center east of the tower or wherever the council decides.

Looking at the local new housing being built in the Tahoe island area all you need to increase your coverage is money.

The whole concept and project is denial of reality of South Lake Tahoe, really stupid. And I hope I am wrong.

Why not build an amusement center at the airport to augment the offerings at City Hall?

This new health center is a great gift given by Lisa Maloff to Barton and the City of South Lake Tahoe, let’s be a little more thankful people. This new center will be an awesome new addition to our community. It will have a diverse offering of all types of medical care both western and eastern. We live in an awesome area and produce world class, olympic gold medal athletes. As our town progresses (to being more awesome!) we need more places like this center. Applauds also to TAMBA, the City of SLT, and the Forest Service for bringing us the new BMX/pump tracks area. Well done. I also look forward to the new green belt area and the new Y shopping area backing up to it.

    Our town rocks people!!

Dr Steadman years ago wanted to build the same facility here years ago. For some reason the City refused. I don’t remember why now.

Maybe one of the ‘really’ old people know. However he went to Vail and became orthopedic surgeon for the Olympics.

I don’t think it was the city who refused
Dr. Steadman I believe he had a significant financial offer from the principal owner of Vail, George Gillet. At that time for whatever reason could not match that offer. Thank you Lisa Maloff for your generous gift. This is will be a great addition to our community.
