Calif. federal reservoirs continue to evaporate
By Dale Kasler, Sacramento Bee
In the latest indicator of the severity of the drought, the federal government’s main reservoirs serving California have begun the new “water year” at just a quarter full and in worse shape than last year.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said Tuesday that the six key reservoirs of the Central Valley Project were a combined 200,000 acre-feet below the same time last year, a difference of about 6 percent. An acre-foot is 326,000 gallons, or a year’s supply for a typical California household.
All told, the reservoirs, including Shasta and Folsom, are just 24 percent full.
Another year of drought with a shrinking lake and resavoirs at all time low levels and people still watering their yards when it’s raining!!!!
Hoping for rain and snow. Conserve water!!! OLS
Can you stop repeating the exact same post “people watering in the rain!”
When? Months ago? When is the last time you saw someone watering in the rain? WHAT RAIN? Old senile skis.
So what? I’m tired of people here in town saying Lake Tahoe is in a drought. Were not, go ahead and water your lawn on the correct days, make sure your not watering the street, conserve like we always do…the lake may be low but Lake Tahoe by itself is not in a drought. Norcal is in a drought because of f’d up water rights and So Cal is taking all its water
Geeze libdrool, wake up on the wrong side of the cave? OLS is pretty much the only kind soul on this rag. He has the constitutional right to repeat himself or say just about anything he wants. Maybe you are the one that should stop repeating your self. It actually rained at my house last sunday. And there were sprinklers running at vacation home lawns.
Lake Tahoe is 1,645 ft deepest point.
Tahoe is NOT going to run out of water…Water away fools!!! Have fun.
The lake is a little more than a foot below it’s natural rim. This is not very low, in fact it’s rather high historically.
@nats: ‘libdrool’…it fits. I like it.
@Snoplease: please define ‘drought’, and provide credible science to prove your assertion that Tahoe is not in one. While you’re at it, explain how Tahoe is not in Northern California.
hmmm,
Sure. A drought is a period of below-average precipitation in a given region, resulting in PROLONGED SHORTAGES in its water supply whether surface or GROUND WATER. Our water come from the ground here, and there is not a shortage of ground water here. So…NO DROUGHT. Also, Lake Tahoe is not water dependent on California reservoirs. And as the above comment stated, Lake Tahoe is really only about a foot below its natural rim…and the long time locals here know that the lake can fill very quickly from a month of snow storms.
Yes hmmm, Lake Tahoe is part of Northern California. I guess I’m making the point that the rest of Norcal is in a drought
“Norcal is in a drought because of f’d up water rights and So Cal is taking all its water.”
Are you really suggesting that there is no widespread lack of rainfall in the region, that the only reason that there is a lack of water in the region is due to water rights and that if we stopped shipping water to Southern California there would be no lack of water in the region? You are making valid points, but there is such a thing as contributing factors here, not black and white absolutes, Snoplease. Extreme position are not helpful, in my humble opinion.
Sno & Lib. What ignorant rants. Northern California is in severe drought and yes we have agriculture, stock yards and orchards that use a lot of water too. We are one California NOT two.
To cut the loss of water evaporating in our reservoirs, we really should be pumping the water into aquifers under ground.
Also, there are 15 desalination plants being proposed along the California Coast from Carlsbad to Santa Cruz.
Pumping water into underground aquifers?!
Are you out of your mind?
NATURE DOES NOT RESPECT HUMAN CYCLES
I was down south this summer and was amazed at the water…OUR water… waste I saw. People washing down driveways, cars, gutters as if the water was endless. I wonder what they would do if suddenly the tap was turned off?!
I was in southern california this summer and saw entire neighborhoods that had nothing green growing in their yards, no lawns, no gardens or landscaping. Im sure there are some who take advantage, as there are everywhere, even here in south lake tahoe. Most of my family live in so. Calif and they all have changed their home landscaping to deal with the drought. There are actually some people that care…
Robin, umm yes, it is called “groundwater or aquifer recharging.” An aquifer is basically an underground reservoir.
Hey rock:) I know what an underground aquifer is:) TY
