California became the first state to ban public schools from using “Redskins” as a team name, nickname or mascot on Sunday in a move applauded by Native American activists.

Signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, the California Racial Mascots Act outlaws schools’ use of the slur effective Jan. 1, 2017.

Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter and National Congress of American Indians Executive Director Jackie Pata, who lead the advocacy group Change the Mascot, praised the action.

The senility from the old goat continues.
Ban, ban, ban, ban, tax, tax, ban, ban, ban tax, tax, ban.

  2. Justice says - Posted: October 13, 2015

This is as ridiculous as liberal looney tunes, senile Jerry, saying he has signed a bill that banned guns from colleges and this will stop the violence because criminals will first stop and check the law and will do so because he said to! Instead of a real solution like providing funds or an order that requires adequate security on all school campuses. What will senile Jerry sign next? This issue as compared to real issues isn’t even in the top 100. What about the huge increase in violent crime for starters? What about the unfunded billions in pension obligations? The mass exodus of taxpayers and business? The millions illegally in the state, bankrupting it? The real issues are not addressed and these liberal loon ideas that do nothing really, is all he does. The taxpayers in the state are evaporating like the water and good jobs. Senile Jerry’s malfeasance is being well hidden and will be seen as a disaster after he is long gone.

What I’d like to know is- When is Notre Dame going to drop “The Fighting Irish” mascot? There’s no stereotyping there, right? I think so. It is offensive- just as much or more than “Redskins”.

  4. Elvis says - Posted: October 13, 2015

As a person of Irish decent, my great-grandparents came through Ellis Island, I am not at all offended by the Fighting Irish mascot. It has no impact whatsoever on my life. You know what I can do about past injustices done to my ancestors? Work hard to make a better life for my family and future generations of all people. Or sit around and complain about stuff.

  5. Al Terego says - Posted: October 13, 2015

“Redskins” is to Native Americans as “N—–” is to African Americans. It has absolutely no place in our public schools other than as a discussion or class about history.

  6. Kits Carson says - Posted: October 13, 2015

This country is full of a bunch of whiny, overly sensitive, wimps. Why don’t you just re-write history and take out all the words some do want to hear…or read?! Sickening.
Yes, sure have a “discussion” about them in schools but I bet you that all the libs will tell the kids they can talk about history but don’t use the word Redskins, or “The Red Coats are coming”, or any other historic words or terms. It just might offend some liberal.

I am also Irish and have zero issue with Notre Dame being called the fighting Irish. But then I’m not an overly sensitive person looking to whine about something.

  7. Justice says - Posted: October 13, 2015

When will the liberals all give back their lands and houses that might have once been used by native people? Under their ideas it is a wrong to own it and historical wrongs must be righted. Next the liberal loons will Ban anything with an indian name like Squaw Valley as offensive. If the road they want to go down is banning anything they define as newly defined offensive speech and names there will be many things banned under their assault on the 1st Amendment and trying to be PC. This type of thinking only gets worse.

  8. Liberule says - Posted: October 13, 2015

Al: so you’re saying natives can call each other “what up my redskin!?” But no one else is allowed to say it? Like the n word?

  9. Liberule says - Posted: October 13, 2015

In regards to “fighting Irish”… It’s only racist if it’s not directed at white people. Duh.

  10. sunriser2 says - Posted: October 13, 2015

Sure am glad our lawmakers don’t have anything useful to work on.

  11. nature bats last says - Posted: October 13, 2015

Its a troll fest. They are obviously low on their weed or meds spewing their hateful dribble yet again…but its just another day of finger pointing cuz thats what they do so well…

  12. Haddi T. Uptahere says - Posted: October 13, 2015

There is some validity in the argument that banning words is an infringement on the right to free speech. Who gets to decide? What parameters will be set? Who decides the parameters? Who enforces these laws? Common sense should be used so as not to be offensive to anyone. Banning words themselves is a very slippery slope.

  13. Kits Carson says - Posted: October 13, 2015

Nature: PLEEZEEE take “finger pointing” out of your vocabulary. Its all you know what to say and so tiring and predictable. Just shut your pie hole.

  14. Justice says - Posted: October 13, 2015

“Finger pointing” is an excuse for ignorance and having an empty head with nothing there. Not even a remote thought about a subject to present a fact or idea. Why they waste space and time is the question.

  15. Al Terego says - Posted: October 13, 2015

Tax dollars support the public schools. Racist terms should only be used in history classes. I’m not saying to change free speech. Tax dollars should not support bigotry or the use of racist terms in any way or situation in our public schools other than to teach history!

  16. Justice says - Posted: October 13, 2015

So Al, you defer that others who have no status and no majority of support can define offensive speech for you in the liberal education field? This clearly violates the 1st Amendment. Maybe a college course on the Constitution is in order. Regardless of party people should respect free speech and the Constitution or leave the country.

  17. Al Terego says - Posted: October 13, 2015

Public school mascots shouldn’t be racist. There are many derogatory, racist terms for many different heritages. Public school mascots should not be any of those. Tax dollars should not fund this.

  18. billy the mountain says - Posted: October 14, 2015

Justass have you taken any college courses in any subject?

  19. Dogula says - Posted: October 14, 2015

Billy, have you ever progressed beyond your college years? In any way? You still act like a freshman.

BTW kitty litter, ive got a masters in natural resource mgnt (honor roll with my grades), worked in my field of education for 20 years, and am in my 50’s. Im a retired (guit my job so not getting any benefits) parent and have lots of time to give to my community and be involved in my childs education and activities. So now that you know im not a teenager or uneducated you got NOTHING. Same for Justanass…NOTHING. I choose to not give any detailed responses because I already know what I believe and I have no interest in trying to enlighten the likes of you or your ilk. I just get sick of the FINGER POINTING. If that bothers you than dont read it.

  23. Local2 says - Posted: October 14, 2015

You know, once upon a time this site was a nice communicative platform to express ones self for well informed alike civil minded individuals of our local community. Now I have learned that is a mean spirited, burn-on, childish behavior, mud-slinging cesspool of disgruntle unhappy human beings who apparently have nothing better to do, get a life!
Thank you Kaye for your efforts trying to help out the community here, but as we all know its takes a few rotten apples to ruining a good thing, and they have.

  24. Isee says - Posted: October 14, 2015

    It’s sarcasm, folks.

  25. Isee says - Posted: October 14, 2015

IMO, When something is this ridiculous, sarcasm is appropriate. Sorry if it went over your head and ticked-off some of you.

  26. City Resident says - Posted: October 14, 2015

Local2 – it’s rare that a civil discussion takes place here. This forum has been taken over by a small group of regulars who amuse themselves by insulting each other. It’s too bad. A typical post follows this format:

    Accuse someone of name-calling.
    Call someone a rude name.

Kae needs a code of behavior and a volunteer to enforce it, by filtering messages before they’re published. The name-callers should get hobbies. There’s more to life than the clever feeling one gets by writing anonymous insults.

  27. rock4tahoe says - Posted: October 14, 2015

To Justn@ss & Kats Crap. My Grandmother was 1/16th Native American and she told me at a young age that calling somebody a “Redskin” was the same as calling somebody a “Ni&&er.” So put a sock in your collective Moron Meth Head pipes for a while.

How would everyone (except Justn@ass and Kats Crap) like the Washington “Redskins” to be called the Washington “Ni&&ers?” Not cool for the 21st Century.

There is a simple fix. Change the Name to a real Native American tribe and get over it.

    Washington Cherokees?

I take part in several “Forums” that are guided by strict rules of behavior but nevertheless manage to represent vastly differing points of view. They are moderated by professional folks, and funded by advertising. They are not attached to any media source. As I write this, I’m involved in a major disagreement on one of those forum – and I’m well aware that, even under a pseudonym, if I go too far I and my posts will be tossed.

This page is a “comments” page attached to a media outlet, not a Forum. Kae and her staff have every right, and even obligation, to control the tone of whatever appears under their banner and byline. I don’t know this, but I strongly suspect that Kae is reluctant to more than minimally edit the postings of her readers as a matter of free speech, despite the fact the only “protected” freedom being represented here is that of Kae and her staff.

I disagree with those who would prefer eliminating anonymity for posters – as distasteful as it seems in theory. In fact I think that anonymity for posters permits many ideas and thoughts and even experiences to be published that, for often very good reasons, might not otherwise see the light of day.

And turning this into a full forum, complete with rules and moderators, would mean more staffing or work days longer than 24 hours, neither of which seem affordable.

But, as much as the strength of this comments site is dependent on the diversity of its participants and the variety of their ideas, I think Kae would be serving both her interests as well as the interests of the participants to take a more aggressive attitude toward editing out the posts and posters that are significantly lowering the level of the discourse. If you don’t want to be known for your rotten smell, get rid of the fish in your pocket. We’ll all thank you for it.

Copper. You have seen some of the Crank Induced posts on this blog. I for one do not want some Meth Head Xenophobe with a gun knowing where my family lives and will therefore remain an alias.

  30. Kenny (Tahoe Skibum) Curtzwiler says - Posted: October 14, 2015

Jeez copper where ya been lately? You know if you wait long enough this site will out the anonymous posters as I have seen it happen several times or they will just get banned as I have (two times). Even when we are civil and use our real names we get dissed or told that we are not respected by wannabe locals. What we need is a macaffe anti virus poster that remains anonymous yet somewhat intellectual. We never see you at the Deli anymore.

  31. billy the mountain says - Posted: October 14, 2015

Dawg do you have any specific observations to support your opinion? If not you are just playing the ‘I know you are but what am I’ card.
Is it really that big of a deal to stop harassing this or any group of people? If you spent big bucks on the stationary and t shirts I understand but otherwise what are you giving up to give these people a break? At least we all get to find out who among us are really ignorant. So for that we thank you.

  32. Liberule says - Posted: October 15, 2015

Well kenny, it’s tough to take any grown man with a ponytail seriously. Probably why you lost the election.

  33. Isee says - Posted: October 15, 2015

    Seriously Liberule?
Did you just move here? ‘Cause it’s well known what happened with the election last year. It was rigged and the seat was stolen behind a ‘wall of lies’.
Good luck trying to discredit Kenny. He’s bulletproof.

  34. My Thoughts says - Posted: October 15, 2015

Liberude is just a Troll. He lives under a bridge and only comes out to insult people that are better than him. It makes him feel like a man but at the end of day he’s just a Troll and no one takes him seriously.
    My Thoughts

Ponytail thing again?? Jeez that is to funny lol. When I was younger I had a ponytail then shaved my head for the 20 years in the military then grew it back. I am just stoked it came back at all. I lost because I got less votes than the other person, pretty simple math there. Don’t forget the hand tattoo that is the plate that held my fingers together when I pulled my ring finger off a few years ago, take a close look next time ya see me, got only 3 fingers on the left hand and my tattoo ring is on my middle finger (34 years with Lil Mama). Tattoos on my arms are a tribute to the Navajo code talkers that saved our asses in WWII. I do notice that our native Americans have not found that offensive yet. I am going to start a softball team with the picture of the little girl from the old Coppertone Tan commercial with the sunburn and call us Red Skins at 6229′.

  36. rock4tahoe says - Posted: October 24, 2015

Isee. No. That last post by Kenny is why he lost the election by 20%.
