Environmental cancer causing agents subject of talk

Learn more about environmental cancer causing agents from Roderick Turner, doctor with Barton Pathology, as he gives a talk Jan. 13.

Cancer is caused by changes in a cell’s DNA. Some of these changes may be genetic or inherited from parents, while others may be caused by outside exposures, which are often referred to as environmental factors. Environmental factors can include a wide range of exposures, such as:

• Lifestyle factors (nutrition, tobacco use, physical activity)
• Naturally occurring exposures (ultraviolet light, radon gas, infectious agents)
• Medical treatments (radiation and medicines including chemotherapy, hormone drugs, drugs that suppress the immune system)
• Workplace exposures
• Household exposures
• Pollution.
