Dead bear found in Meyers neighborhood

A dead bear was found in Meyers on Dec. 2. The cause of death is unknown.

The 2- or 3-year-old cub was not moving behind the house where it was located.

“We did not notice anything that resembled foul play. No blood, no gunshot wounds that we could see, just dead,” Tom Millham with Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care told Lake Tahoe News. LTWC is holding the bear until state officials retrieve it.

A game warden with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to arrive on the South Shore on Thursday. An official with the agency could not be reached late Dec. 2.

It will be up to the warden to decide what to do with the bear’s body and determine how the animal died.

As much as this saddens my heart it’s important that no one jumps to any conclusion as to the cause of the death of this yearling. We at the Bear League will continue to monitor this situation, just like we have with the death of a third year bear that died by being shot in the back.

And to anyone interested in showing support for that almost three year old bear, Gilbert Wetenkamp will be having his preliminary trial hearing at the El Dorado Superior Court in South Lake Tahoe at 8:30am this Friday December 4th. Feel free to join us to send a message to the judge that this community cares for the safety of it’s wildlife!

We plan on seeing that justice be served!
