Mistaken EDSO Facebook post has family fearful

By Steve Large, CBS-13

An El Dorado County father says he was just trying to do what any good dad would do, but instead he was treated like a common criminal.

What bothers Vincent Gatica more is his license plate was posted on Facebook by law enforcement as if he were a common criminal.

Gatica says he has a great deal of respect for law enforcement, but says the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department may have put his family in danger when it posted his license plate as part of an alert in a reported attempted abduction.

A sheriff’s department spokesperson offered no apologies for the Facebook post, writing, “Priority one of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is the protection of our citizens and our community. When dealing with the circumstances we were faced with this past Friday, we will always error (sic) on the side of caution for the potential victim.”

This article leaves out the most important thing about this incident. The man who’s license plate was photographed and circulated via Social Media was a father who was innocently picking up his daughter after school during inclement weather with the following caption: “…citizen… observed a man possibly trying to coerce a young juvenile girl to get into his pickup.” EDSO could have gone to see the owner of the vehicle and make sure he hadn’t kidnapped anyone. Instead, what they did was publicize someone’s personally identifying information while suggesting he was committing a criminal act. We live in a vigilante society. What if the owner of the truck didn’t have the option of using the media to clear himself of wrongdoing? There were comments made after the EDSO post saying somebody should put bullets in his truck (and him), etc. There has been no retraction or apology written by the Sheriff’s department. By NOT publicly clearing Mr. Gatica’s name, they are leaving him open to retaliation for having done NOTHING wrong, and exposing him and his family to danger on an ongoing basis UNTIL the EDSO formally apologizes. By “formal apology” I mean in the newspaper, the television media AND on social media. Because now, every form of media has picked up on this (wrongful) story about a pickup owner who is a threat to young girls/women. If EDSO does not publicly apologize I hope Mr. Gatica files a lawsuit for endangering his life and his family’s lives due to their flagrant irresponsibility. EDSO’s comment after taking their post down was this: “When dealing with the circumstances we were faced with this past Friday, we will always error (sic) on the side of caution for the potential victim.” That means everyone is guilty until proven innocent, according to EDSO rules. I hope Mr. Gatica uses all of the legal recourse available against their misuse of power.

‘Remembers when’ is correct – “When dealing with the circumstances we were faced with this past Friday, we will always err (sc) on the side of caution for the potential victim. . .” should read, “when dealing with the circumstances we were faced with this past Friday, attempts should’ve been made for all citizens in this situation to be secure”, as their ‘formal’ statement sounds about 2-steps away from ‘having a knife or a gun’ to justify what was said or done. . .

Yet another recipe for disaster. . .Right is right, wrong is. . .well, stronger men have said so. . .& felt better about it. . .

We are not always in adversarial conditions, with an officer trying to find a “perp” that doesn’t exist. . .& feeling bad because none was found, as in some cases officers are now disappointed to find out. . .
