Sierra avalanche risk subsides
By Benjamin Spillman, Reno Gazette-Journal
Avalanche danger in the Sierra Nevada around Lake Tahoe is low on all aspects for the first time since New Year’s weekend.
The apparent stabilization of the snowpack is good news for skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers and snowmobile riders following more than three full weeks of delicate conditions in the backcountry. Although some risk remains, the likelihood of slides is low.
The unstable period saw myriad avalanches throughout the region, including one that buried professional skier JT Holmes and another at Sugar Bowl Resort that resulted in accusations of trespassing and reckless behavior against the snowboarder said to have triggered it.
