El Dorado County’s Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees is looking for members.

It is comprised of senior citizens who enhance crime prevention services in the community. The STARs conduct patrols in specially marked vehicles, functioning as the eyes and ears of the sheriff’s department, reporting any suspicious activity observed.

STARs help with:

  • Conducting business/home security checks
  • Patrol trailheads, beaches, and campgrounds
  • Provide traffic control at accident scenes, forest fires, and other emergency events
  • Assist at the Drug Store Project, Day of the Young Child, Sober Grad Night, and other community events
  • Patrol school parking lots, school bus stops, and neighborhoods.

Applicants must attend a two-week training where volunteers gain knowledge of patrol procedures, radio communications, traffic control, vacation home checks, and department policies and procedures.

For more info, contact Lori Hatfield at 530.621.5111.

Belonging to the STAR organization was a very special activity while my husband and I lived at South Tahoe. Not only did we share responsibilities in caring for our community members with other devoted STAR volunteers, which was a tightly knit group, but the Deputy who attended our monthly meetings provided enlightening information to help us do our job better. We were involved in all of the above activities as well as helping locals/tourists needing assistance and direction; we also worked at the annual ‘Every Fifteen Minutes’ program at the high school, the ‘Drug Store Project’ which teaches drug and alcohol dangers to middle school kids, and on Halloween we cheered on attendees at the Pine Cone Motel. Members foot patrolled at Barton Hospital’s Attic Holiday Faire, and other events as requested. We were thrilled to be invited into the parade (two carloads) welcoming our home town Olympians when they returned from Sochi. There are many perks (the most beautiful scenery in which to perform) along with the serious duties we were assigned. I heartily recommend people over 50 investigating this fun but important activity, merely by enquiring at the Sheriff’s office…..Try it, you’re sure to like it!
