The sizable excavation project along Elks Point Road heading toward Nevada Beach is a sewage overflow gallery for Douglas County Sewer Improvement District.

It will result in additional and redundant wet well storage for the district’s main sewer lift station at Elks Point Road and Dorla Court, according to Douglas County officials. It is being put in so that if the pump fails, sewage would not reach Lake Tahoe.

The gallery is underground and will not be visible when the project is complete.

During construction the bike path is being rerouted.
