SLT contemplating leadership at airport
South Lake Tahoe officials are trying to figure out what to do without an airport manager.
Sherry Miller, who has been the director of the facility since 2009, has left for a similar job in Chico.
Ray Jarvis, who heads public works, is in charge for now. He oversaw the airport in Mammoth when he worked for that city.
“We’ll likely recruit for a new manager, but we had already reorganized all maintenance and ops staff to work under the new management and ops in public works, and all airport CIP projects go through public works as well,” City Manager Nancy Kerry told Lake Tahoe News. “Mark Carlson, (former finance director), had proposed eliminating the position as it currently is and changing it to a maintenance supervisor.”
With the reorg, it meant Miller had no staff — it was just her.

No airport manager, no housing manager, no economic development manager. Just because you don’t fill the position doesn’t mean the work or the need goes away. The city has no coherent economic development or housing strategy as it is.
Carl, there is no “need” in this case. Does anyone and/or anything still exist there at City Hall which requires “airport management” at Sherry’s $113,824.59 salary? And she had zero staff to manage? Mark Carlson’s proposal as quoted above definitely makes sense.
I disagree someone needs to manage the public asset worth tens is millions of dollars. Someone needs to be responsible every day to focus on the asset to finds ways to make it better, to pay attention to the detail. Ray Jarvis simply can’t have the time and focus with all his responsibility that one individual whose job everyday can give it. Airport managers are a professiona group nothing against Ray but he is not from thst industry. It’s the same with housing and economic development. This is another bad idea using short term rationale.
The asset will deteriorate Arron’s the edges end give years from now and
A ‘public’ asset worth ten’s of $MILLIONS$ of dollars!
Will be managed by??
Hail Marjorie RIP
One has to wonder just exactly how much that airport…land. NEW executive hanger, $600,000 toilets, restaurant and all is worth on the ‘open’ market?
Sell the entire shebang….clear all the City debt (that would include HOLE#1) and start over.
Go to the airport in the summer, especially July and August. You can see why we have a need for an Airport manager, just by the number of planes coming in to South Lake Tahoe.
