CHP makes record number of air rescues in July

California Highway Patrol air rescues hit a record last month in Northern California due to emergencies at popular outdoor attractions.

“We had the most rescues ever recorded in our unit, about 40 of them,” CHP pilot Jason Hertzell said.

In July 2015, CHP conducted 30 rescues.

Last month, most of the air rescues were between Colfax and the Lake Tahoe Basin, and half of them required a hoist.
