Carson man killed crossing Hwy. 50 in SLT
Updated: Nov. 7, 9:12am:
A 59-year-old Carson City man was killed Saturday night as he was crossing Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe near the Marriott.
Police and fire personnel tried to revive him, but were unsuccessful. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. While officers initially said the victim did not reside in the area, that information has been corrected.
The man was not in a crosswalk when he was struck by a taxi van at 10:40pm Nov. 5. Investigators do not believe speed or other impairment on the part of the driver was a factor.
“People have a tendency to believe nothing bad can happen on vacation. Sometimes they cast off their normally cautionary mindset,” Lt. Brian Williams told Lake Tahoe News. “Use crosswalks, wear light clothing, use lights, and if you anticipate you are going to be hit, you can avoid some of this.”
Officers are hoping witnesses will come forward, especially with how busy it was last night on the South Shore. They were not able to interview everyone they would have liked to because resources were diverted to other areas – like the arrests being made at the same time at Safeway involving car burglaries.
Anyone with information about the pedestrian fatality is asked to call 530.542.6100.

AND you people want to make the corridor more foot traffic in that area.
Build a couple of ‘overwalks’ or tunnels. They work in Vegas and everywhere else in the world. The ‘tunnel’ between Harrahs and Harveys seems to work for them. The fence along the sidewalk helps keep the ‘people’ in line also at very little expense and lots of safety.
Good luck finding a crosswalk in town, let alone anyone willing to stop for one. On the other hand, without crosswalks, tourists with cars don’t have to be overly concerned about liability.
Crosswalks are not impenetrable barriers. Most peds don’t even look right and left. And I never saw a 150 pound human win a battle with a 3500 pound car.
