Hot ashes dumped into a trash can inside of a garage erupted into flames Wednesday afternoon.

South Lake Tahoe firefighters were able to keep the fire to the garage of the Tahoe Vista Drive house.

The occupants of the house were able to get out without injury.

Firefighters urge people to dispose of ashes in metal cans.

Seems like some folks need more fire-education! Seasonal Renters arrive with post-card ideas of fires (either in fireplaces or outside), without knowing how to safely contain them. I called the fire department one night last week, when the young tenants at the duplex next door, had an I UN-contained fire going outside n a small outdoor area, with Sparks flying and NO-ONE IN SIGHT attending the outside fire…. DUH! Only about 1-2 feet away from my old wood fence and a few more feet to the duplex wooden steps to the wooden upstairs deck. It’s not just vacation Renters that cause issues – it is often our seasonal tenants who need to know about fire safety – especially in the mountains!

AGREED ! more education needed ! I have suggested and provided brochures to neighbors that rent their homes. Asked them to post and create notebooks for guest on fire safety, bears, etc.

Cautious – Maybe you could send a copy of your brochure to the Utility companies & garbage companies and ask them if they would like to print and enclose copies to owners in all their billings, with the suggestion it be posted in all rentals. My neighbor-tenants are just doing what they see in movies, are dense & uninformed!
