The investigation into the alleged embezzlement at Lake Tahoe Humane Society escalated this week with officers confiscating potential evidence from the former director’s residence.

Niki Congero has been accused by the nonprofit’s board of taking more than $100,000.  She has not worked at the Humane Society since being fired March 31.

South Lake Tahoe police detectives on June 1 took a couch and financial documents as evidence. Furniture is an item that showed up on the nonprofit’s credit card bill. Congero had access to the card at that time.

Congero has been posting garage sale dates on the Facebook page South Lake Tahoe & Around the Lake Garage Sale.
Congero remains free while the investigation is ongoing. She has not been charged with any crime.

Shame, shame and shame on the entire organization for allowing this to happen. Many, many companion animals will suffer for the lack of controls and dereliction
of duty. Fiduciary irresponsibility to the max.
