The South Lake Tahoe Police Department was kept busy during this year’s 4th of July celebration, although officers said it was a relatively well behaved crowd.

During the 24-hour period starting at 6am July 4 officers responded to 70 calls for police service.

They included:

18-Disturbance

5-Homeless/transient

1-Traffic collision

6-Battery on person

2-Public intoxication

2- DUI

1-Drowning

2-Domestic Violence.

This compares to a year ago when there were 82 calls for police service.

Those calls included:

23-Disturbance

9-Traffic collisions (7 were from same DUI driver)

6-Domestic violence

6-Battery on person

3- Public intoxication

1-DUI.

“Tahoe is a very cold lake and weather conditions change in an instant. It’s more closely related to being on the ocean then a fresh water lake,” Lt. Shannon Laney said in a statement. “We responded to a drowning (Tuesday that could have been avoided with the use of a life jacket.  Paddle boarders, kayakers are required by law to have a Coast Guard approved life jacket with them.  You will be cited if our marine officers catch you out there without one.”

I paddle board and I can tell you that there are SO MANY people, locals too who are not WEARING any kind of flotation devise. Many are not far from the shore and I suppose they feel they are safe but there’s nothing safe should you fall off and your head hit the board. The rental business are most certainly telling folks to wear them. Wish everyone would understand that accidents do happen and your family and loved ones would be devastated.
