The U.S. Forest Service is considering installing a transmitter at the top of Jobs Peak.

Comments on the proposal, which is under environmental review, are being accepted until Jan. 8.

The plan is for a 25-square-foot shelter that would house a radio repeater for improved communications. It would include solar panels to power the transmitter and a 20-foot antenna.

The goal is to improve cover at in the Carson Ranger District.

Comments should be sent to elnoesser@fs.fed.us.

Hi, Kae. Do you have more information about this proposal, such as the link to the document that’s available for public review? I found this link on the Humboldt-Toiyabe website and it appears old, as it says no documents are available: http://data.ecosystem-management.org/nepaweb/nepa_project_exp.php?project=52769. I was very thankful when the junk from the old electronic site was removed from Freel Peak in the 1990s. The Freel – Jobs – Jobs Sister loop is one of Tahoe’s treasures. I have left a message for Erin Noesser, Acting Forest Planner on the H-T NF, at 760-873-2449 (cell #760-920-0381) for more information and will update my comment when I receive it.

I have learned that there are no documents to review and that the Forest Service proposes to make a NEPA decision using a Categorical Exclusion: “Approval…of minor special uses of…lands that require less than five contiguous acres.” Erin is no longer on temporary assignment to the H-T National Forest, although comments are to be directed to her name according to the notice. Jim Winfrey is currently Forest Planner, but he is on leave until January 2 (jwinfrey@fs.fed.us). The Record Courier article contained a bit more info than the Forest Service website: https://www.recordcourier.com/news/local/forest-service-proposes-jobs-peak-transmitter/ .
