Dogs off-limits from South Tahoe marsh
The annual seasonal dog closure at the Upper Truckee Marsh begins May 1.
The purpose of the three-month closure is to keep dogs out of critical breeding habitat for special, threatened and endangered species such as yellow headed blackbirds.
El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies enforce the seasonal dog prohibition and California Tahoe Conservancy staff also monitor for compliance of the South Lake Tahoe property.
Beginning Aug. 1, dogs will again be permitted access to the Upper Truckee Marsh, provided they are on leash. The Conservancy-owned Cove East property, west of the river, remains open for year-round, leashed dog access.
The Upper Truckee Marsh was noted in the 1800s for the number of sand hill cranes that nested there. They still nest north of Tahoe in the Sierra Valley so a small Sierra population exists to this day. What a shame that they haven’t returned to this area. All the loose dogs I see out there (every day, all year round) has an impact on wildlife – not to mention water quality.
Gus, I saw a single sandhill crane this march down in a pasture around Genoa. It would be so nice to have them here in the basin. Sometimes I hear them flying by.
Yes Gus, you took the words out of my mouth. Dogs are permitted on a leash in the Upper Truckee Marsh after Aug 1st? Right! Dogs are running loose there all year round. It’s just wrong.
I saw two blue herons at least I think that’s what they were back in march.
FTR the wooded area adjacent to the southern end of the Conservancy land (off Springwood Dr) is an ideal place to let dogs play.
I’m not sure why the Conservancy hasn’t pushed all dog access to this area alone. It easily could be demarcated by the tree line and the stream so as to keep dogs out of the meadow portion and still allow our furry friends a romping ground.
