Nearly 300 volunteers on July 5 picked up 1,600 pounds of trash, including 5,266 pieces of plastic such as caps, bottles, utensils, and straws.

During the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s post-Independence Day cleanup, volunteers and staff catalogued debris collected from more than 4.5 miles of Tahoe’s shoreline, finding, for example 4,053 cigarette butts.

Each year, more than a quarter million visitors converge on Lake Tahoe for July 4.

League volunteers and staff and their partners cleaned up the shoreline along nine of Tahoe’s beaches: Kiva/Taylor Beach, Tallac Historic Site, Regan Beach, El Dorado Beach, Timber Cove, Nevada Beach, Zephyr Shoals, Kings Beach, and Commons Beach.

Thank you volunteers!! I heard of tourists lighting off illegal fireworks all over the basin, many into meadows and forest areas. It is a matter of when not if this town burns to the ground. Either law enforcement was totally overwhelmed or they were not doing their jobs.

Those of us with the League to Save Lake Tahoe were thrilled to have twice as many volunteers as last year – many thanks to everyone who pitched in, including land managers and our supporters from Tahoe’s business community.

We should also point out that there were other folks hard at work cleaning Tahoe’s beaches on Sunday morning – thanks to Kenny Curtzwiler and his crew who also cleaned up beaches in South Lake Tahoe, and also to everyone from Clean Tahoe who were hard at work in the Stateline area. LTVA was also active on the shoreline. There are more groups who we’re likely leaving out here – thanks to all of you who pitched in. This is a great lakewide effort.

I can see pounds of trash weighed at the dump but did you really make these poor slups count the pieces of trash 5 thousand and one five thousand and two, five thousand and three…. Baha’i

@TahoeBluewire. I agree about the illegal fireworks. The ones I heard were from locals that were setting off fire crackers and a cherry bomb here and there. It isn’t just the tourists that do stupid things.

Are we headed for a ban on fireworks especially with drought? Are there other creative celebration shows on our horizon

I’m struggling to understand the thinking behind someone coming to the most beautiful lake on the continent and leaving empty beer cans and cigarette butts behind. Oops I said “thinking.”
