Incline roundabout lanes to be altered
The Nevada Department of Transportation will reduce Highway 28 eastbound entering the Incline Village roundabout from two to one lane in an effort to enhance safety.
Currently, two travel lanes are in place on Highway 28 east entering the roundabout intersection with Mount Rose Highway. Beginning July 14, temporary pavement markings will be placed to reduce the eastbound highway to one lane. The traffic configuration will be evaluated and, if effective, could be delineated with permanent roadway striping in the future.
“Traffic roundabouts such as this can be instrumental in reducing severe crashes and helping keep traffic flowing through an intersection,” NDOT District Engineer Thor Dyson said in a statement. “But, we continue to see signs of speeding or unsafe merging into the roundabout. Traffic safety and mobility are our top priorities. For safety, the reduced lanes will be tested as a way to slow speeds and help keep drivers in the roundabout safe and mobile.”
NDOT, in partnership with the Tahoe Transportation District, constructed the $2.4 million roundabout in 2012.
Personally, I am not impressed by the use of roundabouts. Everything European is not a good thing to bring here.
There are several issues as this article shows.
Roundabouts are simply not numerous enough in this area, and unsuspecting drivers, particularly non locals, are taken by surprise when faced with a right turn followed by a sudden left turn to go through the roundabout.
Obviously speeding is a huge issue.
Warning signs of a roundabout ahead or flashing lights might help, but some are just inadequately designed For instance, the one on Hwy 88 near Douglas high school has too tight a radius to accommodate many of the long heavy trucks traveling Hwy 88.
Some configurations of truck and trailers cannot navigate this roundabout without putting the front wheels on the outside curbing, and even then, the rear axles often cheat up on the inside curbing. Just look at the tire marks the next time you go through.
This roundabout also has much evidence of people running thru the middle, when caught by surprise, or impaired etc.
THANK YOU Cranky Gerald ! The roundabouts in Kings Beach are approx. 1/4 mile apart and hugely difficult to navigate with endless tourists crossing the street and bicycles trying to navigate at the same time cars are utilizing the roundabouts. Traffic Circles in strategic locations with no tourists work fine but roundabouts in crowded areas with pedestrians is a recipe for accidents.
I’m old, things that are not American and round scare me.
The roundabout in Truckee is a dangerous nightmare. Let’s hope the misguided use of roundabouts is kept to a minimum.
Glad they never installed one at the Y.
