Site lets Californians tattle on water wasters

California is launching a website that lets residents tattle on water wasters, from neighbors with leaky sprinklers to waiters who serve water without asking.

California has multiple restrictions on water use, including banning washing cars with hoses that don’t shut off and restricting lawn-watering within two days of rainfall. But enforcement varies widely across the parched state.

Residents can send details and photos of water waste at savewater.ca.gov. Complaints are then sent to local government agencies based on the address of the offense.

The site went online Thursday as the latest conservation initiative. More than 300 agencies have signed up to see the details of water waste tips. Many local agencies already had their own reporting sites.

Tipsters wary of being outed as the neighborhood snitch can remain anonymous.

The end of democracy is close when you have a snitch hotline to “tattle” on neighbors and waiters. Didn’t Stalin and Hitler rely on tattlers.

Turning in a waiter who.may have served you water is not going to get us out of a drought. Building dams and being able to capture more water will.

You can remain an anonymous snitch! Disgusting.

It illustrates how far a government will go to implement its will, to turn citizen against citizen.

Glad to hear of more steps in water conservation. Every little bit of water saving that we can do personaly helps. It all adds up if more people watched their use of water.
Builng more dams won’t help if we have lack of snow in the mountains. All that water runs downhill. to dams and resavoirs. No snow ,no water. A shrinking lake, dried streams and increasing fire danger.
Conserve water however you can. Old Long Skiis

More damns will not help in any way

Of course more water storage would help. It helps now.

If I tattle on water bottlers and frackers and other industrial over-users of water, what will be done to them?

And yes, Walter, I share your concern about Big Brother and the tattling minions.

Wouldn’t this just be a similar program to the Secret Witness program? And has that program turned into the beginning of a Nazi regime?

How about we get rid of the sea of grass found at every government building? Start at the capital buildings. This would surely have a huge impact on conservation. South Lake has shown how we feel about saving water though, planting grass along 50 for the tourists during a drought was pathetic, and they should rip that out before complaining about someone’s tiny lawn.
