By Associated Press

FRESNO — Wildlife authorities say a 67-year-old California man fought off a black bear that attacked him from behind then drove himself to a hospital.

Lt. Chris Stoots of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said such attacks are rare, but black bear encounters are on the rise due to the drought.

Stoots says the man, whose name was not released, was on his porch Thursday and likely startled the bear that was feeding on trash 20 feet away.

Stoots says it took the man several attempts to fight off the bear and get back inside his home in Midpines, west of Yosemite National Park.

He says the man was bitten and scratched on his arms, legs and stomach. He was able to talk with investigators.

Ah heck 67 year old guy. Just shoot the bear in the back as it climbs a tree tryin’ to get away from you. That’s the way some do around here in Tahoe. Who cares if you’re in a residential area???
Open season on bears! Stay with the guns locked and loaded. You never know when you are going to kill something that is just walking by. Try to scare the bear off, rather than shooting it.
Shoot anything that moves. I’m being sarcastic here. Bears, coyotes, racoons, dogs and cats, noisy neighbors, kids walking down the street who you don’t think belong there..
    Take care, OLS

The article doesn’t give the specifics of the situation but I’m curious if when he unknowingly spooked the bear he was blocking the bears escape path.

It was eating trash 20 feet away. So he didnt secure his trash and now the bear will be shot and killed. He probably curled up in a ball or tried to run.
Really Slowroller, got to pull the race card with a bear? SMDH!!

Another article states:Yepez stepped outside about 4 a.m. at his home in the 5300 block of Colorado Road. He was almost immediately knocked down by a California black bear, said Chris Stoots, a lieutenant with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Yepez fought with the bear and knocked it off its feet by hitting it with a flower pot. But the bear got back up and went after Yepez again. Yepez scrambled inside and closed the door as the bear continued to push on the door and try to get inside.
