Then and now: Evolution of the Y in SLT
A “Then and Now” in 2013 looked at how the Tahoe Valley Y”intersection evolved. Just recently, I came upon a detailed aerial photo, perhaps 1949, which includes labels on early landmarks around the Y. None of which exists today.
Nevada Lumber and the schoolhouse were gone before 1960. They were near today’s sites of Tahoe Valley Pharmacy and TJ Maxx. Lampson’s Market and the gas stations remained when the Y”intersection became a four-way in the early 1960s.
Today, all aspects of the Y have changed since the aerial photo taken more than 60 years ago.

Went to school in that school, 6th grade, Ms.Perins I think was her name, there are still several people left at Tahoe who went there, 7th and 8th grade were held at the Tahoe Valley Pharmacy, Mrs. Belding and Mr. Gardner.
I THINK I SEE RUNNELS
Bill, Lampson’s Market. A fine store. Wish it was still there. I didn’t know about a school being in that area or a lumber yard.
On a side note, Christy thinks The Thunderbird Lodge was up by Paul Kennedy’s Steak House. So that old motel was in that general area.
Thanks for the history lesson! OLS
The 5 cents a scoop ice cream cones at Thrifty Drug Store deserve their own special recognition forever and ever.

I did an article one time about the “Y” and was informed by Caltrans that the actual name is WYE. That is the way it is in their books. Nice job Bill. I love this stuff
That’s when Tahoe was Tahoe, I remember some old stores like Lampson Market/Bijou Market shut down forever by Raleys and Safeway Super stores. However development has changed the face of the South Lake Basin so abrupt and quickly, I can hardly recall anymore what once was.
